does anybody have any images of this new BBC News 24 countdown? I've only seen it briefly today before top of the hour, but would like to see it in more detail.

There are some images and a video clip in this thread.

Anyone else find this similar to the original Flags era TOTH? The drumbeats in particular...

Dodgily Edited example

Yes - I know it's not a very slick edit, no complaints about it please Smile

BBC News 24 Countdown - Through the ages.

A trip down memory lane, from the first, the tweaked, and now the new.

That's good. I like the headline bed at the end of the clip do you have the full bed or could you extend the one on the clip and upload it here?
Thanks in Advance

The flags era was always my favourite music ... same people that did the original 5 Live theme!

Nicky, who composed the N24 flags music? Was it George Fenton? Also, did the same person/people do the BBC World flags music, too?

Yes you are right tv is 50Hz but the refresh is done on alternate lines during each scan so the true picture refresh rate is 25Hz.

Not strictly true.

UK Broadcast TV consists of 50 interlaced fields every second, which many people think of as making up 25 frames per second. However it actually depends on the source of the video signal.

If you take a 25 frame per second film sequence (or "flickered" video) then both fields show detail from the same frame, so in this case you are correct. Two 1/50 sec fields contain information from the same 1/25 sec frame.

However modern CCD video cameras run at 50 frames per second, and 50 fields are derived from these by line averaging. This means each 1/50 sec fields contain detail from different 1/50 sec frames - which is why video motion is more fluid than film. (In the days of tubed cameras 1/50 sec fields were scanned with vertical line offsets on the scanning pattern - which you can't really do with CCDs in the same way)

A 50Hz interlaced video system "could" show a countdown with 50 numbers per second, though if you froze each frame (rather than each field) you'd see a mix of two numbers. However when it was running, on a normal 50Hz TV, you'd see 50 distinct, though half-resolution vertically, numbers, as you would if you froze a field and field-replicated.

The composer of the News 24 music (and the rest of BBC News themes + Radio 1 Newsbeat) is David Lowe.

Someone told me ages ago that the it was the same person/company who composed both the original BBC 1 Balloon music and the N24 flags music. Not sure who it was, or even if it's true!

Yeah. The reason I mentioned George Fenton was that he composed lots of music for the BBC during the 1980s and 1990s, so I'm hazarding a guess that it could be him. Does anyone know otherwise?
