This is just tedious. Can't we find some proper news? The bloke's been poisoned, probably by a KGB bloke - 'nuff said, Blair and Putin are still mates, can we have something new now please?

Do you not think it's important that the Russian Government are apparently poisoning and killing their opponents? It's a huge story.

Oh come now, that's hardly news is it. Stop being so naive.

Even if you didn't mean it those are my sentiments. Maybe I'm just having a male period at the moment but every story has been "his condition has slightly worsened", "his condition is a bit better", "his condition is poor". And finally, "he's dead". It's just felt like overkill to me - but it has been quite a slow news week.

Are you insane? Are knowledge and interest of news presentation is unquestionable, but as for news values - you've a lot to learn.

This story is huge, domestically and politically. Why on earth do you think they gave it so much coverage. The stormont story yesterday was also incredibly huge, but the radiation story was by far bigger. An unprecedented event is what it was, and still is.

6 or so devices found in a British Parliament building! An armed man almost gaining entrance..... THAT IS HUGE!

Someone (an ex Russian resident, now UK resident) poisoned with a highly toxic and radioactive substance on UK soil is a bigger story.

Just to add my tuppence worth to this debate, I think it is worth pointing out that La Repubblica, the Italian newspaper, has given this story the first fives pages of today's edition, and it has been number one on the RAI's bulletins too. LR suggesting (although it does exaggerate at times, being Italian!) that he may have been in effect a dirty bomb, so poisonous was the substance. I don't know what the Mediaset channels said about it, Berlusconi and Putin being good chums, but as he wasn't a pretty girl dancing about naked, I can't imagine they gave it too much time.

Did anyone notice, a slight technical problem, earlier today on BBC News 24 at around 1.15pm. Just after the presenter, announced what time it was, they went into the main news headlines again, and showed video of the news... then the BBC News 24 logo appeared.... (only for about 2 seconds!) then it was all back to normal!!! Very Happy

Yeh I've normally noticed similar things like that happen on News 24 and usually at the weekend.

During Click they must have been testing new graphics as a National Style aston poped up saying BAGHDAD and there was something behind the ticker too.

Was it exactly like the national style astons?

Why on earth do you think they gave it so much coverage.

Two reasons why news channels gave it so much coverage...

1. It happened in London and there was a slight risk to Londoners
2. Spy novels are popular, so there's a fair bet that spy stories will be - i.e. they were going for ratings

Of course if they manage to find some link to Putin, then this will be a huge story, but they won't. It's not in the interests of the UK to find a link, and it's not in the interests of Putin to let them find one. Diplomacy is far, far more important than justice. It'll be forgotten, buried, within weeks if not days.

To me, big stories are surprising stories. Car bomb in Baghdad, not news. Car bomb in Paris, news. German government poison opponent, news. Russian government poison opponent, not news.

I guess the "something" behind the ticker was infact the ticker which will be used with the new graphics. If there testing them now, i would think that they are launching them on Monday or the Monday after that.
It will be good to see them, as i think they will animate a bit more than they do on the nationals.

Or the sensible option, someone pressed a button by accident.
