Good old Tim Willcox did a double shift back-to-back last night. What a guy! When will he finally get the recognition he deserves with a prime-time regular slot - or better still - more exposure on the nationals?

That's the BBC for you. If you remember, they treated Adrian Finighan the same way. He didn't really have his own shift on BBC World, despite being the best presenter on the channel. When I started watching World, he was presenting weekend shifts only. Then, when Mishal Husain left for Washington, Adrian was brought in to cover the weekday evening shift. He really seemed comfortable on that shift but as soon as Mishal returned, he was kicked back to weekends and the odd weekday relief shift. Thank goodness CNN are treating him much better. It seems Tim is suffering the same fate.

He's excellent
He's almost too good/solid/reliable to have his own slot. And he clearly loves it there, even when it means knocking off on screen at half past midnight and getting back on screen at 08.30am as he was doing for part of last week. The BBC always want him on, loads of shifts to cover and he is their best relief presenter, and he always wants to be on, the man has been known to go for over 14 days without a day off. Pleased for him to see him doing the National bulletin from N6 the other Sunday - shows how serously he takes the job, choosing 5 mins of National exposure vs. a double Sunday afternoon shift on News 24.

I'm quite confident he will be doing 2 shifts on Sunday too.

I somehow doubt the presenters are allowed to pick and choose what they present.

Indeed! Otherwise, Anya Sitaram could roll up and choose to present the Ten O'Clock News!

BBC News 24 staff are none too happy at having to work from a temporary perch in the BBC newsroom this week after it was decided their own second-floor perch needed to be fumigated from top to bottom. Even worse, the BBC newsroom air conditioning seems to have only two settings: very hot and very cold. Expect tempers to rise and egos to explode.

I think Tim Willcox is one of those presenters that will never get promoted to a regular shift as he is always covering and able to cover any shift no matter what time or day. If he was to go to a set shift, say on a weekday, then there would no longer be this cover presenter who can present any shift and so I think he will remain as a cover presenter as he is too valuable for the BBC in covering other shifts. Besides the BBC are a bit short on cover presenters resorting most of the time to using reporters.

It's not as if Tim Willcox is the only person who can "cover any shift no matter what time of day". It depends on the contract each presenter has with the BBC. If the management decided they wanted Chris Lowe to be flexible, then he would be. It just so happens that Tim Willcox is a relief presenter at the moment. Any presenter can do it.

Does this mean that N8 is out of action?

I don't know the ins and outs of this story but technically N8 is in the N24 newsroom. It isn't a separate "studio".
