Very disappointing coverage of the Tonga earthquake on News 24 during the Five.
It just shows how News 24's graphics team are far far inferior to that of Sky News. Sky have had the Breaking News strap up since JT broke the news with updates appearing as they come in. No need for the presenter to spend a lot of time on it as there are few details, but the strap on Sky works so well.
On News 24, no info on the graphics at all except when Huw read it out.
WHEN WILL NEWS 24 LEARN! Graphics are more important when the presenter ISN'T reading it out. They should keep us in touch while the channel moves on.
Tsk!

Perhaps this is because for now, this earthquake isn't a big story. Earthquakes happen all the time - making a big fuss about one because it may (but probably won't) lead to a tsunami in Fiji and New Zealand is pure sensationalism. Let's hope nothing happens: quite apart from the death and destruction it would cause, the days of speculation on these boards as to who will be the first newsreader to get to Fiji will get tedious beyond belief.

But it's typical of News 24. They put the graphic up when the newsreader is talking about the story anyway, so it's not that important for a graphic, and when they move on it disappears. What's the point of that. Might as well put the subtitles on if I just want a text version of what's said when it's said.

Perhaps worth remembering that tonight's '5' had lined up Sir Menzies Campbell and David Cameron on the programme, so it would have been considerably more difficult to handle breaking news in any huge depth, bearing in mind that News 24 had been flagging up today's '5' for that very reason. Opens another kettle of fish with how planned a rolling news channel can afford to be, but worth bearing in mind all the same.

I'm obviously not making myself clear.
My point isn't that News 24 should have dropped everything and have a presenter talking endlessly to correspondents who didn't know anything yet.
My point is that they should use their graphics to keep viewers up to date with breaking news NOT just to emphasise what presenters have already said, as they do at present.
I don't know what goes on in a gallery and whose job it is to type information into the graphics, but if it means employing an extra person - however qualified (I wouldn't have though they'd need to be that skilled, maybe a trainee broadcast journo who can type) - to make sure the graphics are a) up to date and b) are independant of what's going on onscreen, complimenting the information available, not duplicating it, then I think it'd be worthwhile.
An example of point a) is that Ben Brown had interviewed someone who had said the quake was 7.8, yet 5 minutes later the graphics were still saying it was 8.1. An example of point b) - they move on to business and the earthquake straps disappear and new business ones appear to duplicate what Ms Caesar is spouting!

Interesting point - and you're right - they were no graphics, but to blame the graphics team is simply wrong. The graphics get there IF they are requested and as we've seen before N24 are quicker than SKY, just as often as SKY are quicker than N24. It all depends on what the focus of the editorial and journalistic side is at the time. This applies to both the straps - done in the gallery, and the maps etc - done in the graphics area.

Oh very intresting there, Eakin opened at the top of the hour, no TOG titles just the standard scrolling BBC NEWS one, with the '24' at the end, no RTS News Channel of Year Branding and open to find Katty Kay anchoring in Washington for the Mousari trial!
I guess this is simulcast because of the slight delay before Katty spoke, but the titles were '24' branded and not generic!!
Is it on BBC World if anyone is watching?
Cant remember the last time Washington ancored a simulcast!
A clean throwback to London and N8, umm that was a welcome change!!!
I cant watch World, do they still dual anchor from Washington and London? they used too for BBC America?
