Can anyone shed any light on this?
The methodology behind it is that a countdown is a waste of airtime. It would be much more beneficial for the BBC to broadcast a shed load of trails promoting their programmes.
A countdown keeps people glued to the tv, adverts don't.
It might keep "TV Forum" people glued to the TV, others may see it as a nice handy "90 seconds before anything interesting happens" warning that it is safe to go and make a cuppa, or surf a few other channels knowing that nothing new is going to happen for the next 90 seconds.
Much as I think the BBC over promote a few select shows in their trailling strategy (If I see the BBC Three Casanova trail ONCE MORE I WILL EXPLODE!!!) - I can see the wisdom of using the top of the hour for programme promotion rather than a countdown (though as a piece of production I think the News 24 countdowns ARE great)
I think that the large majority of people find much more attractive the BBC countdowns or Al Arabiya's "Views of the World" (which is ACTUALLY amazing, you should take a look that!) than adverts, in particular if the adverts are rubbish or always the same...

BBC News 24 played out an 88 second countdown before the 0400 headlines on Thursday 10th March... has anyone spotted a 90 second one since the current fleet of countdowns started?
Also, BBC ONE used to play a generic countdown until the top of the hour when joining BBC News 24 overnight. They just seem to play masses of trails and then a very brief ident when joining at the top of the hour now. Has anyone seen anything different from this recently?
