BBC News 24 played out an 88 second countdown before the 0400 headlines on Thursday 10th March... has anyone spotted a 90 second one since the current fleet of countdowns started?

Also, BBC ONE used to play a generic countdown until the top of the hour when joining BBC News 24 overnight. They just seem to play masses of trails and then a very brief ident when joining at the top of the hour now. Has anyone seen anything different from this recently?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

The methodology behind it is that a countdown is a waste of airtime. It would be much more beneficial for the BBC to broadcast a shed load of trails promoting their programmes.

A countdown keeps people glued to the tv, adverts don't.

It might keep "TV Forum" people glued to the TV, others may see it as a nice handy "90 seconds before anything interesting happens" warning that it is safe to go and make a cuppa, or surf a few other channels knowing that nothing new is going to happen for the next 90 seconds.

Much as I think the BBC over promote a few select shows in their trailling strategy (If I see the BBC Three Casanova trail ONCE MORE I WILL EXPLODE!!!) - I can see the wisdom of using the top of the hour for programme promotion rather than a countdown (though as a piece of production I think the News 24 countdowns ARE great)

I think that the large majority of people find much more attractive the BBC countdowns or Al Arabiya's "Views of the World" (which is ACTUALLY amazing, you should take a look that!) than adverts, in particular if the adverts are rubbish or always the same...

Be aware that nobody in the UK can get Al Arabiya via Sky Digital. And I agree with noggin; only TV Freaks like us at TV Forum would be fascinated at the 90 second-countdown.

It's a good channel Al Arabiya, it is broadcast from London AFAIK.

The red panel on the RIGHT of the image below seems to have gone on the sports segment I just watched. Instead it was frosted clear with a red horizontal band continuing from behind the screen.

Also, is it me or have they taken some of the red coloured wall that is usually behind the presenter on the stand up area with the plasma?

Well, perhaps you're right, but I strongly believe that a countdown keeps more people glued to the tv than an advert.

Well, I can't judge the quality of the channel as my Arabic is terribly poor, but its graphics, astons, studios, music are really amazing.

It looks like N24 have changed the panel to the right of the stand-up screen again . The previous changes saw a big chunk of red being replaced with a frosted white/grey panel; the latest changes now provide a "window" onto another area of the newsroom.

And while I've got your attention, I do wish N24 would do something about its 'feature' graphics. Whenever something like a map, or information slide is shown, the animation goes smoothly and all looks very nice - but a few seconds after the animation ends, the whole thing seems to seize up, with a 'freeze-frame' style effect; the whole slide goes shaky, and the anti-aliasing on text goes tits-up. Not a problem on the main astons - just on full-screen graphics.

Tiresome.

In fact, another relatively recent change - one that's been in place for a couple of weeks though - is the new graphics used for Sport presentation. In addition to the red/black and yellow BBC SPORT animations used, there are now generic static slides for each sport showing a relevant image (a teed golf ball and club; a football alongside the appropriate club pennant etc) in front of a dark static frame of the BBC NEWS ribbons and globe.

Very nice graphics, but they seem a bit superfluous; and it surprises me that they should preoccupy themselves with completely new graphics when they still can't get the bloody BBC SPORT logo to line up with the Tower on the score slides!

I just think they should use more animated images on the screens, they look really effective.

Interesting, just how big is News 24's newsroom?

That 'window' looks out on the guests' waiting area (which, incidentally, proudly features one of the old flags era sofas!) and the "atrium" - if you look over the balcony (which is right behind the big screen where they do the sport) you can see the main newsroom which used to be the backdrop for the BBC1 bulletins between 1999 and 2003.
