Maybe a stupid question. But does anybody know why on BBC News when there is a single presenter they sit at the side of the desk and not in the middle?

So they can fit the screens in either side?

Because there is a laser printer hidden from view in the middle behind the table. It gives them their latest scripts and copies of viewer's emails etc. You can sometimes see them picking the paper up from the top. It also appears in some of the high shots.

Surely there is room though? From the picture with Phil Hayton it looks like you could fit one of those chairs in there. It does look a little odd when they are always at the side of the desk (they look uncomfortable too), I think a middle desk shot would look a lot neater.

Maybe during news summaries they could stand up in front of the glass screens near the desk instead of doing it in the pod?

Six people manage to fit around the same desk during Dateline London.

I think it's purely for aesthetic reasons. Two presenters sit at different sides of the desk, take one away and you've got one left at one side of the desk. It would make camera angles awkward for the screens if a presenter was sat in the middle, and I have a feeling the presenters are accustomed to sitting at sides now.

I thought the same thing, the presenter sits in the middle of the desk during that programme.

If they were sat in the middle of the desk, it would mean a change of all camera angles to accommodate it. With a presenter sat to the side of the desk, it fits in with what the viewer is used to, it means the cameras do not have to be reset, and they can get the usual shot of the rear projection screen for illustration of stories and to do two ways with reporters and guests.

There seems to be some very touchy feely contact between Kate and Simon this morning. They always seem to get on so well and have a good laugh. It does seem though, that they are really suited to NEWS 24. I find her background on Daytime TV and her glamour puss style (second only to Natasha Kaplinsky) frustrating.
