The folly of the recent graphical changes becomes apparent once more, this time with regard to the larger text on the ticker masthead. Previously, with the smaller text on the masthead,

HAVE YOUR SAY

would fit quite comfortably into the available space. However, since needless increasing the size of the text, there's simply not the room. The solution? Eliminate those pesky spaces between the words, and hope no-one notices that the first and last letters are still spilling off the edges.

-IAVEYOURSA`

is what's been showing on the ticker masthead for the last five minutes during the "What does the EU do?" Have Your Say segment. If only the BBC realised that it's this kind of unnecessary, ill-considered tinkering that results in everything looking a mess.

Personally, my radical solution would be... get rid of Have Your Say!

If I want to know people's opinions, I'll log on to something like TV Forum. BBC News is there to tell me the facts. It's lazy, sloppy broadcasting copied off Sky News.

I don't necessarily agree. People want the facts - and that's what "Have Your Say" on the news channel intends to do. Retrieve factual answers to questions that viewers put to the newsmakers. It would be useless if the segment was purely opinion, which it is all too often on Sky News.

Today's Have Your Say wasn't the usual version, whereby they read out the mindless drivel they've had e-mailed in.

Instead they were putting mindless e-mails to the Europe Minister and getting his responses. I think they were using the ticker for some of the other questions they didn't have time to ask.

No, the ticker showed truncated versions of the questions they did put to Wee Dougie, before and after they read them out. For some reason.

What's going on with the new 8.30am start? All this week we've been told on Breakfast that News 24 'has the latest news from home and abroad, after a full weather forecast , whilst on BBC One, the news where you are.'

However, there's been no weather forecast on News 24 - instead a BBC London bulletin every day. Perhaps someone could decide what they're doing... and let the Breakfast team know.

There will.

A new Doily is on order for the big occasion

A new Doily? What the heck has a cloned sheep got to do with News 24? Methinks you're pulling our legs, archiveTV!

Susan Osman - James.

If Susan does appear on the 10.30-1 shift, could someone please take some caps- i'm going away. Thanks!

Well, that was odd. During the 0755 BBC London bulletin, the travel update was suddenly interrupted by a cutaway to an empty BBC News 24 set. The view was from the right-hand area, looking towards the desk, with activity going on in the newsroom behind. On the screen to the left of the desk, some snazzy colour bars.

Then, just as suddenly as it had started, it ended, throwing us back into the middle of a sentence on BBC London.

Madness.

This happened several times yesterday during The 5 O'Clock News with Huw. During the piece about the Union Flag/Union Jack (according to the interviewee both names are acceptable), we were treated to a few seconds of the R-H screen (blank), and a minute or so later a rather bemused Dan Corbett grinning into the camera for a few seconds Laughing

Ben and Emily are getting there slowly. I have to say I'm more impressed with Ben's presenting style, he still appears novice-like, but his ad lib abilities are getting better.

Emily has a smooth style but at the moment doesn't put enough emphasis in with intonation when reading off the autocue. She also speaks a bit too quickly, which makes her harder to watch as she is also quieter than most other presenters.

Give them time...

I have to say that Ben and Emily are certainly 'beginners' to a rolling news channel. Ben seems to be doing better, he's had a headstart in practice. Emily seems to speak in the same yet timid tone. But I agree with you News24, they will improve in time. After all, all newsreaders have to start somewhere...
