Since my question in the Breakfast thread appears to have fallen by the wayside, I will ask it here instead. Why is it that the overnight bulletins simulcast on BBC News 24 and BBC World, do not have any breaks? How can BBC World manage this, when I was under the impression that certain regions opt out automatically at fixed points during the hour, which is why breaks have to be taken during The World Today?

They do - you just don't notice where the opt in and opt outs are - you will normally get a British story in one of them. Also they play ads where you see the weather in the UK etc.

The ad breaks are hidden. At about 12 minutes past the hour the presenter does a coming up in the bulletin promo. At this point World opts out to do ads. News 24 continues with news - timed very carefully to fill the pre-agreed gap. Then at about 15 minutes past World opts back in and the presenter does the quarter-past headlines. It's not perfect - sometimes there's a presenter pause before World opts back in - but it just about works.
Excellent work from Jon Sopel and N24 pres today; excellent coverage and plenty of angles, carried well - kept viewers abreast of the news as it developed. And on a personal level, what a great job Jon Sopel did - fantastic determination to broadcast events under all circumstances, even after being attacked and having to jostle to get into the hotel "Nous sommes le BBC!"
Great work, should be recognised widely as the way the job should be done. Great work Jon.

AIUI this is done during the day as well because not every region of World takes each advert break. It depends on the peak time in each of its regions, if it's the middle of the night in Asia they have less ad breaks and the same for the european night
So two weeks now until the big reshuffle and a few questions remain unanswered..
1) Is the weekend schedule remaining the same or changing?
2) What's going to happen to Maxine Mawhinney?
Maxine is moving to Weekends mainly Sunday 1300-1700
Thank God for that! I wouldn't have been able to stand another 'news hour'!
So are they straight through from 1830 to 2200, or will there be any special programmes or sections in the evening line up. Also, will 'News 24 Tonight' remain? Personally I think they should be using the best of the 1/6/10, World and regions throughout the day on News 24, not just for an hour!
