The first thing I noticed when i flipped on N24 earlier was their plug for citizen journalism on their ticker. I've seen it go past 3 or 4 times in the past minute. Very annoying.

Regarding the tower (squashed or otherwise), I wonder why they never considered just having the silver digits "24", as they appear in the main intro, but sized to tower scale, and remove the clutter that is "BBC News 24"?

If the BBC were just to have 24 on the tower, viewers will not know what channel they are watching. The reason for the tower in the first place is that it informs the viewer what channel they are watching and who runs the channel. The BBC branding on the channel is stronger than the 24. The reason for this is because viewers know that they are watching the news service from the BBC, removing the BBC News, will mean viewers will have no knowledge of who provides the service, thus probably leading to viewers deserting the channel.

Bit of an exaggeration, ain't it? Laughing

Point taken, London. I guess your comments are further vindicated by the same logic being applied here in BBC World land, where removing the brand name would dilute the aim of powerful BBC Global reach.

On another point, I have always felt that the brand name BBC News 24 was a silly one anyway. I would have preferred the channel to have simply been called the BBC News Channel. The current name always seemed a bit too futuristic and "not BBC-ish", if you know what I mean? It was always like the middle-aged father trying to be hip to impress his teenage daughters friends. (I am sure someone must know what I mean.........?)

Wouldn't the simplicity and sturdiness of "BBC News", or even "BBC" have been more appropriate?

I dunno.

Absolutely. 'BBC News' without the '24' sounds more authoritative to me, and as you said, sturdier.

I am aghast at the wonderfully awful "squashedness" of the tower, akin to some dodgy 4:3 ARC on a Widescreen set.

Let's hope the new Royal Charter will call on the BBC to sort out its graphics...!

Funny, I was thinking the same the other day. The ticker - now nice and clear - repeats |B|B|C| every story anyway. Change this to |B|BC| NEWS and it'd be sorted!

Has anyone noticed at the end of the opening credits on the World simulcast during the night it says 'RTS News Channel of the Year'. There isn't the big 24, just BBC News and that. I just thought it was odd, as i thought this goes out on BBC World as well?

That looks much better - but not much different to what it was before the start of all this silly tinkering. Kate looks lovely there -best looking newsreader in the UK - but in the world it's got to be Melissa Theuriau. Google her and you'll see what i mean!
