Part of the problem is surely that the BBC One "presenters" are relatively untested at rolling news and handling rapidly breaking stories- certainly far less experienced then the incumbents.

Well the specific examples quoted, Huw has plenty of News24 experience under his belt, and didn't Natasha come from Sky News?

Anna Ford and possibly Fiona Bruce I'd take your point on.

Surely there'd be a "limit" on who'd appear, another Sission situation appearing with Ford...

Anyway Tash did used to do Sky (There's another joke in that...)

I take your point, but presenters of the 'Breakfast' programme have some experience of rolling news. Sophie Raworth, Sian Williams, Bill Turnbull and Simon McCoy would be able to handle it.

All these presenters are (or have been) on-air for over half an hour at a time. They have a similar role to those doing a three to four hour SKY News shift.

'Breakfast' is also airred live on BBC News 24.

Darren Jordon also worked on BBC News 24/World during the Flags Era and George Alagiah is an excellent journalist with experience of rolling news - remember he was drafted in the evening of the first bombing raids on Afghanistan in 2001? I'm sure with his skill, he'd be able to manage it on a regular basis.

So, that really only leaves Fiona Bruce and Anna Ford who haven't had any experience of a rolling news channel. The rest have at least had a little experience, with some having had quite a lot.

Darren Jordan started off as a sports presenter on BBC News 24 (during the flags era). He then started presenting the news (mainly overnight i think). After that he was the male launch presenter of Breakfast at weekends with Sarah Montague, presenting the Friday, Saturday & Sunday programmes (inc Weekend 24). Him and Sarah both moved on from Breakfast within a few months (i dont think it was ever intended for them to stay there for long). Darren to the One etc, and Sarah moved to Radio 4 (nothing to do with her little F word to the camera i might add). Thats when Bill & Sian got it together for Breakfast at weekends.

Very true.

Comparing a journalist with another; there will be likenesses and gulfs of difference. Not all great rolling news journalists are great presenters. Some presenters are also duff reporters!

I always preferred George when he was out in the field, as a top notch correspondent!

It must be purely out of coincidence that these two newsreaders IMO are some of the worst that the BBC have to offer, and I for one will be glad when they move on.

Out of interest, has Moira Stuart had any experience of N24?

Moira did a few months on the early morning N24 output when she was kinda "homeless", having been thrown off of the national bulletins (6 and 9) during the virtual era, and even was not allowed to present weekend bulletins.

I never ever saw her on N24, but by all accounts, she DID do it for a few months.

I could guarentee that if Moira was back on BBC One, maybe on the Six, or even a N24 shift, the ratings would most certainly be boosted. Surely the BBC cannot be oblivious to this fact?

Anyway, don't want to get drawn into a big debate about the BBC not allowing non-journalists to present a main bulletin, so thats all I'm going to say, but I'm not in a minority in saying this I'm sure.

Not sure about Sophie Raworth, but I guess Breakfast has a lot more in common with rolling news than a set piece bulletin like the 1/6/10

That's a little harsh. There is a fair bit of news content in the programme though there are a fair few lighter stories as well. Least there is more news than The Peter Levy Show.

Interestingly, Alistair Yates did the 23.00 - 01.00 shift tonight; Deborah McKenzie has made a welcome reappearance on the overnight simulcast, which I'm sure will please World viewers too.

Breakfast is a bit different to N24's format now, but after the 2000 re-launch it was very much rolling news until 08.40. Plus, Sophie also anchored News 24 during the Iraq War coverage.

I've just discovered a cracking website, dedicated to all things (and people) newsworthy,

http://artsigloo.co.uk/mtn/

Definatly worth a visit. And it even has a link to TVHome, so it can't be bad!

Yeah, I posted about the site in the Media Websites forum a while back. And now the person behind MTN (Framescourer) has started posting here on TVF too.
