Was today the first time that Jonathan Charles has been in the presenter's chair (0900-1300)? Never seen him present before, but he was quite good IMO, from the little that I saw of him.

They're struggling for presenters today...

Julian Worricker did the 16:00 - 19:00 with Liz Pike and he's stayed on to do the 19:00 - 22:30 with Jane Hill

Why are they struggling for presenters? News 24 is a joke these days - the usual presenters are constantly disappearing -

Maxine Mawhinney is very seldom on N24 and usually when she is off, so is Matthew.
Jon Sopel has not been on for a while
Even though brilliant, Tim Willcox constantly covers for everyone
Louise Minchin is the latest to do a vanishing act

Remember all presenters are freelance; they all have other broadcast and non broadcast commitments, they are all allowed to have holiday time off, take time off for personal commitments etc. Some of them are contracted to work less days or hours in a year than others. If they cover additional shifts, they need to take a day off back in return. For example, Chris Eakin worked all day on Sunday covering the oil refinery explosion - he has been given 2 days off in return. This is the time of the year where things are pretty fluid on the run up to the festive period. I would imagine any presenter who works on Christmas Day will be given an few days off in return, too.

Tim Willcox, Julian Worricker and others are constantly covering for everyone because that's their job! And they do a great job of it, and probably enjoy the variety of working with different people at different times of the day on different days in the week.

There's any number of reasons why presenters may not be on; they may even be ill. So even though a presenter rosta exists, and they do have their own slots, they are not advertised or published in places apart from here, as they are liable to frequent changes, which is in line with the channel itself - rolling 24 hour news, which to an extent cannot be planned.

Out of interest, Jane Hill is on her own now from 20:00 ...

Is this the first time News 24 has been single handed on a normal weekday before 2300?

I saw him too but there were a good few akward and cringeworthy moments...at one point just after the sports news, Kate was just about to begin reading a story when he started nattering on about Liverpool in the premiership or something and the look on her face! She gave a fake chuckle said something and smiled sarcastically as if to say "shut the f**k up!" She wouldn't play ball with him at all on that one. So akward!!!

I presume most presenters are having this week off so that they are available next week. Isn't it also double pay over the Christmas period, so they would want to work for the extra money?

No, it happens occasionally on that shift. Out of interest I think it has always been Jane Hill on her own without a male presenter alongside her. I've seen her twice before on her own in that slot. More frequently, one presenter is on their own after 22:00 for the last half hour of their shift - I've seen that happen a few times.

That's why i like Jane. She is great on her own or with another presenter. She has true talent.

What about the likes of Clarence Mitchell, Jake Lynch, Janet Barrie, Philippa Thomas... etc......don't they appear any more? (I wouldn't be all that bothered if Jake never does, to be honest. Clarence is quite good IMO.)

She was good on Breakfast last Thursday with Dermot. They seem to get on well and she's equally as good at the serious and light-hearted stuff. A true talent!

Unfortunately, the only one you've mentioned there that does appear regularly is Jake Lynch (he was on at 2300 the other night). IIRC, because she hasn't been on a while, but one of the two women you mentioned (I think it's Philippa) isn't very good at all. But I might be wrong, it's a long time since I've seen either of them studio based...
