Four press releases just appeared on the BBC Press Office site - relating to News - but none along the lines of W12's comments.

I'd imagine the biggest changes are:
One O'Clock and Six O'Clock News edited by the same person
New Controller of BBC News 24
"greater consistency of branding", whatever that may mean
And reading between the lines, fewer people working on BBC One bulletins
I'd imagine the biggest changes are:

I'd take greater consistency of branding to maybe mean News 24 astons (and maybe Tower) used on the 1/6/10. Hope so?
Fewer working on 1/6/10, so more on News 24.

Does this mean the excellent Ten news will now become as bad as the dreadful Six ... or that the dreadful Six will become as good as the excellent Ten?
All packages made for News 24... surely News 24 should be concentrating on lives and 'ever-changing' stories, not creating more stuff to be fitted into a fixed schedule a la Sky?

I would imagine that a significant part of the changes here will surround presentation to accommodate N24's permanent on-screen furniture. If you watch News 24 Tonight, the number of times the Tower and ticker have to be animated out and in again to allow the regional graphics to be fully visible is significant, and is also an unwelcome distraction. I therefore expect that that particular change will be more about style than substance.
And while I agree that N24 should be focusing more on reporting stories that are developing and changing, there is still a place for reporting stories from throughout the day, and from around the country. I don't believe that creating all packages for N24 compatibility will necessarily have any impact on the schedules.

News 24 will cover the stories they need to cover, whether with lives or packages. Any packages produced by them will then be looked at by the production teams of the 1, 6 and 10 to see if they fit the programme, and re-edited to do so. That's what the press release says and that's what it means.

Broadcast are carrying this story now
www.broadcastnow.co.uk for more
It certainly makes sense for consistency across the board, it is important to have a uniform image, and also hopefully the evident problems re: the nationals vs. 24 will be ironed out.

A few other lines on these changes came out from TV Centre this afternoon - not all of them so suited to a press release, but possibly of more interest to people on here. Here are some of them, and some of the "spin" I've picked up today.
New editor for the 1&6 - probably slightly more elements in common between the two. There'll be less competition between the 1 and the 6 - not so much of the Six trying NOT do do things the way the One does them. That'll save a few quid.
The same production team works across the 1,6 and 10 - unlike the three distinct teams they have now. As I understand it, the only people who will be tied to one bulletin will be the editors (presenters are apart from this). What difference will this make on air? Probably not much.
A few jobs will be shifted from the 1/6/10 to News24 - only a handful though. It effectively means News24 won't have to make job cuts after all.
Packages being made for News24 rather than the bulletins - flatly denied. Whoever briefed Broadcast magazine last week was either badly misinformed or winding them up.
More emphasis on good graphics. Instead of different designers working on largely the same thing for the One, Six, World and News 24, one designer will do one version that all will use. The idea is that there'll be more graphics to use on more stories, and done with more care - although not quite so tailored to each programe's needs. There'll also be more emphasis on doing 3D and VR graphics - apparently Horrocks is keen on News having more "Snow" election style graphics.
(BTW, News24 tower and astons on the main bulletins - doubt it. The clashes on News24 Today are because the nations and regions designers don't always stick with the "safe areas". They'll probably get whipped into shape eventually....!)
Controller for News24 - it'll make decision making faster, and give the channel more managerial oomph.
Effectively a Controller for BBC World - similar.
BBC News exclusives or breaking stories their reporters uncover will almost always be broken on News24.
There will be big changes for the people working in TV News. Either the editor of the One or the Six will be almost certainly out of a job. The current most senior people on News24 and World are effectively having to apply for their own jobs. A lot of people work on the One, the Six or the Ten because it fits in with childcare etc.... committments.
Oh - one more thing (and why do I suspect this is the thing that'll get seized on?). Breakfast might not move to News 24's studio in April after all. It'll definitely go from TC7, but it might move into N6 along with the One, Six and Ten. They're looking at a set that can remain physically the same throughout the day, but with new screens/graphics can appear totally different according to the programme. Very much a work in progress though....... but if it happens, it by definition means a new set for the main bulletins.... Noggin's post in the BBC News Set thread covers this admirably.
