Terrible sound issues on N24 all afternoon. A UUP member was being interviewed in Belfast earlier around 1620 I believe, and complained that he was getting interference from another station on his earpiece, and shortly thereafter pointed out that he was hearing a weather report through his earpiece. Similar shambles continued with just about every guest interviewed for the Ashes coverage.
I've not had an opportunity to see how ITVNC or Sky News have covered the Ashes today, but I've greatly enjoyed N24's coverage, oddly enough despite my not being at all interested in cricket as a sport. I don't doubt that ITVNC and Sky had plenty of exceptional coverage of their own - probably even better than that seen on N24 - but I was just quite gripped by the way the event was reported on N24.
They've spent a lot of time covering it this afternoon, and I think they've really captured a sense of the atmosphere and excitement which obviously filled The Oval. A great help in achieving this has been the fact that Louise Minchin is completely off her tits, and almost incapable of standing up properly.

Not seen Sky's coverage, but ITVNC's has been diabolical! They only had a reporter outside the Oval whereas N24 had Louise on the balcony overlooking the pitch as well as a helicopter shot. While N24 were covering the umpires removing the bails via the helicopter shot with Ray Illingworth's views overlaid by much cheering, ITVNC had the newsreader on her own in the studio with about much atmosphere as there is on the moon, reading the breaking news aston.
Well done ITVNC!
News 24 - spot on, if a little over the top! Good bit was where Jon in the studio asked Louise at the Oval if someone was out, she said she didn't know and dragged James Pearce into shot, and then when they returned to Jon he thought they were all out and threw across to the sports presenter for confirmation and they had a discussion across the studio. Almost as comprehensive coverage as C4!

Anyone noticed that Alastair Yates has been given a new picture on the profiles page? Its about time they gave all presenters new photos - let's hope this is the beginning!

I like the little virtual urn being used tonight. Isn't Chris Eakin a tad over excited though?

Hardly surprising really considering what a pisspoor imitation of a news channel ITV is. I really don't know why people bother with it. Apart from a more co-ordinated relationship with the ITV regions than the BBC has with its equivalents - what do you get by watching it? (When I say 'you', I don't mean 'you' personally, I'm just making a general point). It's miles behind N24 and Sky - and will never catch up because it's so poorly resourced.
Don't get me wrong - I like ITN and admire what they do. The network bulletins aren't half bad considering how criminally underpaid ITN are for producing them. But the NC is just a joke - run on a pittance, and it shows.
In a typical act of nonsensical bravado David Mannion (or it might have have been Dominic Crossley-Holland) claimed the News Channel would become market leader within three years or so. No it won't, not until you get ITV to pay proper money for it. And then it would never make any money back - because 24 news channels don't make profits.
Well there we are, nothing really to do with this thread topic - but I feel better for getting that rant out of my system.

Have I missed the return of Nick Robinson to BBC News? He's on N24 now - what date did he return? I presume it was sometime last week before Marr started his AM programme.

He officially started on 1 September, but came to work a day early to cover (IIRC) Ken Clarke's declaration of his candidacy for the Tory leadership.

The presentation of business news has been updated - much better now.
After the main business story, the business presenter then does an 'In Brief' style summary, as with the usual 'in brief' news summary, with the astons, but with the 'Business Today' music bed running underneath.
More business news, and much better presentation. Cutting out the chit-chat works much better for business news I feel.
