Dermot presented the 10 tonight. Is this a first? I have never seen it before.

I think you should get use to it as he is the main/only relief presenter of the ten now because Darren Jordon has left the BBC and what with George Alagiah now the main presenter of BBC World's World News Today he can't do the ten too (unless he wants to do a 11 hours shift).

By the way, is Fiona Bruce part time as she never presented any other news programme on the BBC apart from the ten which she does once a week. I know the boss of BBC news wants Natasha Kaplinsky and Sophie Raworth to work more on BBC News24 but not heard him ever say anything about Fiona Bruce, come to think about it I never seen Fiona in the News 24 studio.

Fiona Bruce presented the Ten O'clock News from N24 studio a few months back, some last minute N6 technical problem was the explanation someone here gave.

Err - Fiona used to present the Six O'Clock News, that was in the era when Huw did... So to say she never presented any other news programme is incorrect.

AIUI the normal schedule is for Fiona to present two Ten O'Clock News bulletins each week, and Huw the other four. Unlike the One and Six - which run 5 days a week - the Ten runs for 6 days a week, as there is a Ten on Sunday. (Fiona usually presented the Friday and Sunday Ten O'Clocks)

Given that Fiona also presents Crimewatch, Real Story and, in the past, Call My Bluff, and - like Sophie - has a young family, I think she's hardly a slacker.

Indeed. I often think that people on this forum think the newsreaders go in five minutes before the bulletin begins and leave five minutes after it finishes. The Ten O'Clock News presenter will have been in the office from mid-afternoon, not to mention spending their own time going through the newspapers. So, even though it seems they work 30 minutes a day, they are actually working a lot more. As noggin says, Fiona does that 2 days a week as well as all her work for BBC One programmes. She probably does just as much as Huw.

Yeah, I do know that but what I mean was the post January 2003 period. Huw has done the six and one since overtaking the ten. But from what I can remember she has not done six or one since joining the ten.

Crimewatch is once a month, Real Story is set to be axed. Sophie has two children under three and has still returned to work full time.

He has only presented them when there's been a co-presentation from another location (Westminster, Beirut) he hasn't presented the One or Six on his own in the studio.

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe that was Sophie's choice? Maybe Fiona doesn't want to work all the time. You don't know the first thing about her personal financial situation.

Yeah that is right.

But I think everyone is losing the point I was making, I think Fiona is great but she is was wasted by the beeb she sould be given more to do, more specials. Everytime something big happens its always Huw that does it and the beeb think Natasha is great when she is not.

Sorry - that wasn't clear from your post.

Huw has only done the One or Six as a co-pres from a location (or possibly when a presenter has gone sick at very short notice - I can't remember) - he hasn't been a regular presenter.

Fiona has other shows to work on during the week - so isn't around in the newsroom, or scheduled to be in the newsroom, as much as Huw, so it is obvious that Huw would be the first person called on to co-pres a major story. He is also in most people's eyes the lead presenter of the Ten, and thus defacto the lead BBC News presenter, so would be first choice for any major story - with George also in that mould - especially for non-UK stories, given George's background as a world correspondent (aka foreign correspondent)

Yep - but Real Story hasn't been axed yet, and whilst it is still on-air it remains a responsibility surely.

It's questionable really whether you'd count the Sunday edition - it may be branded as the Ten, but it isn't really. Do they use the Ten editorial team, or just the Weekend team?

Anyhow, talking of that is it being axed next year when Panorama moves to Monday?

Considering Panorama is being moved to clear the schedules it seems stupid keeping it at a fixed time - I'm sure the vast majority of viewers would prefer the bulletin to be half an hour or so later to allow any film or drama at 9pm to run uninterupted.

But as itsrobert said, Fiona may not want to work all the time.

I'm sure I read an interview last year or something, where Fiona said how lucky she was to be able to work on all the programmes she does and is still only part time...
