they've been letting the regions do their own thing for the last week or two now. Much better system.
I don't actually agree. I much prefer them to go back to the 6.
Yeah, I think they need to end the programme properly. At 6.30 at the moment the close always seems a bit rushed with nothing to simbalise the end of the main programme (i.e. closing titles like in 99 for example)

Caught the end of North West Tonight (tonight) and they were just reading out loads of text messages - even more than Granada usually do actually!
I do wish actually now we'd take a step back and the 1pm, 6pm and 10pm bulletins were once again self-contained - especially now they are simulcast on News 24.
Then instead of incorporating the regional headlines in the programme they should take a 30 second break mid-way through where a local trailer can be inserted - and in News 24's case they can tell you what's coming up later.

Not much chance of that happening - whenever you do that you give the audience chance to switch over or off. Hence I assume the trial (I understand that it's for three weeks but may continue) of the regions doing the end headlines - less chance of people turning off when the regional shows end and hand back to London. Remember the regional shows get a good audience for the BBC. It's helped by the national hand to them - people switch off when trailers/promos come on.

Again the reason for that is it gives people a reason to switch off or over if they think something has finished. By handing to the regions you do away with that - less likely to hit the remote.

MO
As far as I'm concerned as soon as anyone mentions anything about regions, I turn over! "Have
you
every despaired about the boringness of regional news programmes? Moz from Wrexham has and he thinks they're a waste of time. We send Jonny Jonson along to find out why...!" - as all their stories go.

In that case Look North would be better off doing the headline immediately after the headline, before they roll the titles.

BBC Scotland's never handed back to London - they've been doing the end-of-hour summary ever since the verbal handover from the main news was introduced.

I thought none of the nations ever handed back to London.

I hate this thing the BBC has about people switching over. First they started it on BBC World and then on the BBC One News. The outcome is that they've butchered the end of every news bulletin they produce! It's so disjointed and uncomfortable to watch. I'm sure an 8 second piece of music at the end of the news isn't going to make people switch over. Has the BBC ever thought that people will probably switch over no matter what they do? I mean, at 1930, I'm going to flick over to ITV for Coronation Street, no matter what the BBC does.
