Paxman clearly resents the fact it exists and does all he can to make it run late or be a mess

Sounds like Paxman all over to me. He needs to realise he isn't bigger than the show, and that constantly asking people the same irrelevent question over and over again does not a good interviewer make. The sooner someone in charge wakes up and realises, and sacks this god-awful presenter, the better.

I absolutely 100% agree. This style worked about 10-15 years ago but since then politicians know how to handle it. All that happens is that the viewer gets very little from the interviewee. The only exceptions to this are the splendidly off-the-wall questions that he always seems to save for Blair interviews (like "do you pray together?" and others, which always baffle Blair).

Indeed, audiences understand things better as well. If a question is asked twice and a politician gives a politician's answer, we are clever enough to know what he/she is trying to avoid saying. IMHO, people like Jon Sopel, Chris Roberts (Sky) and Andrew Marr do decent political interviews. The Paxman style has had its day.

Agree totally. Paxman has just got to the stage where asking the same question over and over, baring in mind the interviewee isn't going to change their answer, is downright annoying and unproductive. I much prefer Andrew Marr or Jon Sopel.

Anyway, on a different note, i'm liking the use of the new look titles on the news24 studio summaries, with the ribbons flying around (See here)
And what is the graphic on the screen?

That's the screens with their transparent look.

I like what they're doing with the 6. On the update just before 7, they use a semi-dark backdrop, as the sun is now going down at that time! Very clever and very nice!

Breakfast News
I hadn't seen this before..some of you may, some not, anyway - its an interview from MediaGuardian from about 3 weeks ago with head of TV News Peter Horrocks.

Interview

Points of note...more use of 'big names' - Sophie and Natasha specifically mentioned - on News 24.

The 'Five Live' effect on Breakfast - making it more chattier, and the 8 week lead it has had over GMTV.

Also, Kate Silverton, Ben Brown and Emily Maitliss are singled out as rising stars.

Worth a read, if you haven't already.

How many viewers is Breakfast getting now then on average?

The news headlines from George are coming from the night time backdrop. So the Six will use the dark set in the winter - unlike the virtual era when the daytime set was used for the six o'clock news in the depths of December.

I know the astons are mocked, but why were Simon and Joanna just sat there not saying anything? Or have they just cleverly edited and duplicated a moment's pause so it looks longer?

It looks like the picture is split, and they are playing each presenter doing what they do when the other one speaks.

If you get me.

Honest to god, has there ever been a less charismatic presenter than Ben-bloody-Brown. I find his continued success unbelievable. He was a workmanlike, if unremarkable, reporter. He's an awful newsreader - dull, lifeless, absolutely no chemistry with his co-presenters.

I can sort of see why Kate Silverton or Emily Maitlis are flavour-of-the-month, even if I'm not a huge fan of either, but Ben Brown's soaring ascent is bizarre. Can someone explain to me what I'm missing?
