Someone forgot to turn studio sound down during a report about the earthquake, so we ended up with paper shuffling and a loud "HA HA HA HA" from Simon.

Well, that'd be the person who was working sound, or might it have been a spaceman with magical powers.

I think it's pre-assumed that I was talking about the sound operator, unless you're inordinately thick.

Unless Michael Foale popped in to show us some tricks he'd learned?

Then why bother posting such crap?

OH NO, sound operator misses a fade in a loud and busy gallery.

to be fair, it was the juxtaposition of him laughing loudly when pictures of death and destruction were being shown. I mean News 24 (the graphics in particular) is shoddy at the best of times and it doesn't get mentioned on here.

But you've never seen me, so kindly sod off.

It's a basic fade that isn't usually missed and as hyma mentioned it was badly placed. Why did you pick up on my post if you felt it was that banal?

There is a rare appearance of Jon Sopel tonight on the Six, he has just presented the afternoon update, and will be back with Natasha.

In the headline opts at the beginning of the show, the headline bed continues over the regional headlines.

How is this possible, as i thought that the sustaining feed to the regions had BBC London on them, therefore if they just kept the network audio fader up we would get the London Voices?

Please enlighten me.

Each region uses their own copy of the bed in what's called an "opt-out". They usually start the bed when the opt begins and then opt back in for the titles.

BBC Regions and Nations have their own copy of the headline beds. You'll notice in certain regions the National (David Lowe) bed will seemingly continue and in other regions they have adopted their own bed.

And what a mess it usually sounds, with what's usually basically a restart of the bed, at a different volume level, and sometimes different tempo. Whatever there's always a 'clash'.

Why can't London just supply a bed on a channel somewhere that regions can just mix in to their audio? This way it'd be perfect.

ITV News now seems to have the same problem.

I thought that was what was happening (each region starting with the bed in the opt) but it just seemed to seemless the last few times I have watched it.

Thanks Jon

What's up with BBC News staffing at the moment? Is it just half term and annual leave, or is there something more going on?

Kate & Simon on Breakfast the other day, Jane Hill on the One, Jon Sopel on the Six, Ben Geoghan & Maxine on 2-5, Gavin Esler on the Five, Chris Easkin on 6.30-10, but the most surprising was just Jane Hill REPORTING on a hospices report on News 24!
