It looks as though Chris Eakin will be making a BBC1 appearance today.

Indeed, on a shorter than normal One, whilst Anna Ford has just appeared this evening. Wonder who will do the shorter Ten?

Well Anna's still here, so I assume it will be her.

Yes, she said so at the end of the last news bulletin.

I thought Chris did really well. I've never seen him present a national bulletin.

Anna Ford had a few problems as well. Two 2 ways about Hurricane Katrina didn'thave any sound.

Do you think this is a sign Chris Eakin may be moving to Nationals?

Probably not - he merely filled in on a bank holiday bulletin. It's usual for there to be 'unusual' presenters on a bank holiday, especially in August when many presenters are on their own holidays.

Also gone are the days when it had to be a 'nationals' presenter on BBC One - it's much more sensible and indeed cheaper to use one of the News 24 presenters to do a bulletin before they go on to do their shift on News 24 (although I have to say I don't know if that applied to Chris as I haven't seen much N24 today but it's like Matthew doing the odd daytime summary etc.)

It's interesting that it never works the other way round having a national presenter do the national news and then a cover shift on N24. For example if Anna Ford does the One and they are short for a female presenter to do the 16.00-19.00 on N24 then why doesn't Anna Ford cover it instead of the political correspondents?

Probably because doing News 24 is rather different to doing a BBC1 bulletin. That is illustrated well by Peter Sissons' move to N24. BBC1 bulletins are heavily polished, but N24 is, like any news channel, unpredictable. If you spend all your life presenting polished bulletins, and are then thrown on a news channel, it must take quite a bit of getting used to.

I thought that may be the reason as perosnally I don't think Anna Ford would be much good with breaking news or on a three hour shift.

Never usually seeing the 1, so never seeing Anna, when did she lose her touch... there really didn't seem to be any spark there - it seems like she doesn't want to be there, and I don't think handled the technical faults particularly well (do most people outside the industry + this site know what 2-ways are?!).

Nice to see Sophie Raworth presenting the One O'Clock News today. I think she's a lot better suited to the One than the Six. She works a lot better as a solo anchor. George Alagiah seems to dominate on the Six.

So who's doing the Six tonight then Rob?

Not sure, James. I've just returned from the hairdressers and I just missed the 15.20 update. I'd guess that Sophie may stay all afternoon and do the Six as well. I think she's done that in the past.

Yes George Alagiah did the 3.20 News Update and said he would be back with Sophie Raworth for the Six. I noticed he did the Ten last night - is he doing it again tonight?
