At the very end of this clip, you can see Philip Hayton pointing towards the floor as if to be pointing out the exact spot where the earlier incident took place.

In the 80's, was the BBC Nine Oclock News broadcast from the same set/desk/studio as the Six? As a youngster, I always assumed it was completely different studios used, probably due to the simple use of different camera angles on the opening! How naive..................

No you were right, they were in different studios. The Six had its own, whilst the One and the Nine were in another studio with the desks opposite each other. Newsround was shoehorned in at the end of the Nine's desk.

Philip may have been pointing at the floor as if to say "where would they handcuff themselves to here?", as they didn't have a monitor desk like the Six did.

Gavin, did this arrangement continue after 1988 when the Nine O'Clock News was revamped? Did the Six still have its own studio while the One and Nine shared?

Is that a new desk on the Six tonight? I thought it was the same one, but then in one of those camera shots it seemed more oval...

It is a new desk - same design as the one in N6.

So it is. What a shame. Out of interest is it the same size as the N6 one or slightly smaller?

New desk looks much nicer than the old one - more in proportion. Also nice to have a more uniform look between bulletins.

Except I really don't like that particular design of desk - so bad news for me! It just doesn't feel right somehow.

Wonder if Newsnight will use that one, or get their own?

Looks like it would be perfect for Breakfast...shame the word 'desk' is a swear word for the programme...

I'm afraid I don't know, Rob. It must have been 87 when I was there.

I do remember the general election (was it 1988?) used a wide shot of the One/Nine studio and showed both desks facing each other as they had been when I was there.

I'm guessing it links in with the new Newsnight look. There'd be no point it swapping it over.

I wish Breakfast would use the desk and studio more. It looks so plain now, and they're in a great space.

I think it may be slightly smaller. I'm not a massive fan of this style of desk, but, judging by the regions, it's going nowhere fast! Saying that I never liked the one used in TC7 up until Friday and it is better to have a bit more continuity between N6 and TC7. 2 years on and they seem to be rrally hammering home this uniform 'brand' - similar desks as the national news in the newly-branded regions, and N6 replicas popping up around the country! -BBC London, Look East, Look North...I'd imagine South Today in the coming weeks as well.
