I don't ever recall the camera zooming-in on this shot before. The whole point of the logo was to have it visible, one assumes.

Those were the days................

Aha......so Michael Sullivan DID actually present the BBC News during the Falklands War in 1982! Another blast from the BBC past!

The CA did mention industrial action. Perhaps the technicians were on strike, including the usual camera operators.

I suppose the director wanted to make up for the total lack of pictures in this part of the bulletin. It doesn't bother me that much actually and although it's not something I recall them doing routinely, it's certianly nowhere near as bad as some things from a similar era that I've seen in the (fascinating) VIntage News Clip from Around the World thread.

I sat at that set in 1987. It was just out of commission I think, and they brought it up to the BBC tent at the Royal Highland Show. I read the autocue and took a video tape of it home. Woo.

The stripes on the back were made out of wooden dowels (like broom handles) sawn in half and painted.

Ah the magic of television.

Couldn't find the Newsnight thread...and rather than start a new one, I just thought I'd mention the rather appropriate ending they had to Newsnight on Monday. Jeremy mentioned the death of Donald McCormack, and thus the programme ended with a closing for Donald from years ago, complete with the old theme, and closing titles, and with the old slanty BBC logo...was a rather nice touch...still up to see on the iPlayer.

I'm getting increasingly annoyed at the use of these 'UK Economy' graphics on the nationals.

'British Economy', surely, since the acronym 'UK' is not an adjective? And the word 'British' extends to Northern Ireland so it's not as though they'd be leaving them out.

You wouldn't say 'France Economy' or 'China Economy'. It's French or Chinese.

'US Troops' is another one that doesn't really make sense to me. Although I've always prefered the full acronym 'USA' personally - and that's only one extra letter so I can't understand why they don't use it.

Every time I watch the main BBC news bulletins, my eyes are always drawn to the floor of the set. It's always dirty, and has cables all over it. Tonight it even had what looked like some rubbish on the floor.
