The 6 is on BBC 2 tonight in order to keep the Roddick Murray match on BBC1, how did they get around the region opts? There weren't any.

I suppose they scrapped them for consistency (as well as the fact that millions of people would just get BBC London anyway) - if the tennis finishes by 6:30 then the regions are back on BBC One and the Six will presumably have a "proper" end rather than the usual handover.

Earlier on the regional news was due to remain on BBC1, with the Six on BBC2. Now the regional news has moved across to BBC news, or rather 'BBC London News' as my Freeview box reads due to opt-outs not being possible. Whilst those watching tennis may find a channel hop inconvenient the BBC really should stop attempting to shift regional opt-out programmes onto BBC2 when it's becoming less possible to view the opt-out (particularly as some regions no longer have terrestrial).

And so the continuity announcer on BBC2 network has to explain that viewers in England won't be able to view their regional news on Freeview or Digital Satellite, however that it was viewable on analogue TV. Rolling Eyes

I like how backward thinking it is to make viewers switch to analogue BBC 2 in order to see their 'regional' news in England Laughing

BBC Two Wales went straight to Wales Today after the Six with no ident.

I presume the Network CA failed to point out that some viewers in the regions which can't opt on analogue won't get their news at all ?

BBC Two NI cut out a silver blob ident to go into BBC Newsline.

Except for those in Cumbria, Northumbria and most of Devon who have no analogue BBC2 to switch to

Some regions can't opt out on analogue either - Hull, Jersey, Oxford, Cambridge

Not being able to watch the local news on digital is disappointing, but it was nice to see a proper closing sequence on the Six for once. It feels so much better than a sharp cut to the regions.

Cambridge can as such, or at least as far as showing the main Look East programme on analogue. I'm guessing you mean they'll be no opt-out within the programme to the Cambridge studio.

Completely agree with you! Part of me wishes do the whole 'next are the teams where you are' bit but then properly end the bulletin.

Yeah, nice to have a proper end. South East Today showed a caption saying their programme would be on BBC Two shortly on BBC One for a while, momentarily obscuring the SW19 generated generic red caption.

Ah yes. I used to love the closing sequences back in the 1999-2004 era:

Anna Ford at 1pm: "In a moment, the latest from the BBC's news teams across the United Kingdom, but that's all this [insert day here] lunchtime. Good afternoon."

Huw Edwards at 6pm: "That's the latest. I'll be back with an update just before seven. Now, it's time to join the BBC's news teams where you are. Bye for now."

Michael Buerk at 10pm: "Newsnight's starting now [nods head to his left]...over on BBC2. But, from the Ten O'Clock News, goodnight [wink]."

I never thought there was anything wrong those, to be honest. I never subscribed to the BBC view that viewers would switch off in their thousands because of a 6 second musical sting. The closing music is even shorter now - most people wouldn't even have time to reach for the remote control! The sharp cut to the regions has, and always will, feel very abrupt and abnormal.
