Why dose BBC national news need to rehearse?
Is It for BBC one?
And there's a few things I've noticed when the news at one is on from the nc studio the camera shots are much better-cleaner but when it's the news channel they are a bit more sloppy and the other persons shoulder is in view...-that's just a example am I the only one?

They need to rehearse as they are the flagship News programmes on BBC One. They need to run through the script to make changes if it sounds off a bit or if there are last minute changes e.g. developments and ensure that the whole bulletin runs seamlessly.

Also they give the regions and nations the cues as to when to opt out e.g. the last headline etc.
You probably notice the shoulders and such as the camera position doesn't change but as the NC is double headed.

So is the one not a flagship program or can they not rehearse as they are produced by the news channel team?

The latter. In terms of audience share, the 1 is the most popular bulletin (I think).

Well the One is produced by the NC, I'm not sure what classification the 1 has but the News Channel controller is also the 1 Controller whereas the 6 & 10 have a different editor, gallery team etc.

From the diagram below, it looks like it's now only the 6 and 10 which are considered as bulletins...

As pointed out already the 6/10 have a separate production team why would the 1 produced by the NC have seperate desk space? Are you really saying the 1 isn't classed as a bulletin because they don't have their own desk space!! Rolling Eyes

Pretty much. It's just 30 minutes of the News Channel.

Just because it's not on the diagram (floating text boxes on a powerpoint) doesn't mean they don't use that space.

But the One isn't produced by a separate team like the Six & Ten are - it's produced by the News Channel team, so logic would dictate production would originate from the News Channel's 'area' as opposed to the 'bulletins' area. I wouldn't infer from that that it's not still considered important - on screen it frequently features the BBC's Political/ Economics/ Business editors and Sophie Raworth is still regarded as one of the 'main' presenters on BBC One - but production certainly isn't what it was up until 2008.

Which raises the question of why there needs to be a separate production team for the Six and Ten. Although they both take a (slightly) different angle to the news agenda (the Six is perhaps the 'lightest' of the bulletins, but that's really not saying much) I wonder how much is actually produced primarily or exclusively for those bulletins, compared to them simply taking what Newsgathering, the News Channel and bits of current affairs already have? How often is the Ten's running order (including reports) dramatically different to the 8pm hour of the News Channel, if you leave out any live interviews? While I know Nick Robinson said in his recent book (which I absolutely recommend to anyone interested in how broadcasting plays into politics) that he sometimes still narrates/edits his reports minutes before air, but that could still happen for a News Channel-produced bulletin surely?

Also that diagram is only a very small area of a very big newsroom so how do you know what the rest of the area has!

Because the rest of the newsroom is in subsequent diagrams.

There is a dedicated bank of desks for the One/Five team.
