I thought the original idea was that they would stand up for the top story and sit down when they've moved on. So if there was more than one report on the top story they "should" keep standing.

Indeed. I remember Huw Edwards saying this when they relaunched in 2006, although it never really happened it practice.

It's also been done another time and I think it was for the MPs expenses scandal.

The headline bed is played out by both the national studio and the regional studios. It would sound much better if the version being played out from London could be continued through the regional opt, but the News Channel's sport headlines are on the sustaining feed at the time.

In the early days the BBC LDN (as it was) studio at Marylebone High Street used to get a feed of the bed, apparently this was because their opting out arrangements were not standard and it meant that they couldn't play in their own copy in time with the version N6 were playing out.

You generally get a bit of a jump at the start of the bed if your region doesn't do the thunderclap. NWT is particularly bad for having a jump and I don't think they have ever played the right bed during the quarter past headlines. Yet I think Midlands Today sounds worse using the thunderclaps which are often spoken over to fit the headlines in the short 15 seconds.

I take it the regions watch the national feed as Stuart on BBC Look East was laughing when the the 6pm coming up opt switched to the region, it was straight after the story about the fake call to the Hospital with Kate Middleton in.

So is this the only way to know if the opt is successful?

I presume that they need to hear TVC to know when to cue in.

So they just use a tv? What about the delay?
