I'm sure that's how it went, I remember BBC Midlands doing "On Midlands Today at 6.30..." very vaugely in a promo timeslot
Am I right in thinking that the Six regional elements were only introduced with (or after?) the new-look in May 1999? I really can't recall the old virtual Six having regional heads or halways. Whether that's just my memory playing tricks on me, I can't be sure.

No, it was introduced with the 1999 revamp, that was the big thing about the revamp, to integrate the regions more. It was the first time they'd done it. For a while that was the only bulletin that did it, I think the One followed in October 2000 when it went widescreen and the Ten when that started a few weeks later.

I cant recall when the Six's recap of headlines ended, but there is still to this day a line booking so that the Six's headline pictures are sent out to all the regions so that they can recap the national stories. I'm not sure how many regions still do this. Given that the format of a lot of regional news shows is still a traditional 'magazine', ending with features and softer interviews etc, going all serious again for the national heads often jarrs and spoils the cosy banter associated with the end of the regional opts.
The recap ended when the One Show came back full-time in 2007, allowing it to start just before 7 o'clock. As I said in previous posts, I felt that update was actually quite useful if you missed the main programme, but obviously with the current studio set-up of sharing with News 24 would make it much more difficult than it used to be. Plus, the 8 o'clock update didn't exist then. I do miss closes on the bulletins though.
You make a good point regarding serious national heads in regional programmes - maybe that's why I've always felt Midlands Today is much less friendly at the end of the programme compared to North West Tonight. When NWT did a national update, it always came before the weather and one final lighter story, which IMO was the best way to do it. The weather prior to one final lighter story was also a better system than they have now with Diane walking over to the sofa following the forecast, but that's a discussion for another thread!!

I miss the regional idents ahead of the regional news as well as the closes.
The national headlines always jarred on Look North as well, often having to change from laughing banter to serious face in a blink of an eye.
It's funny how the concept of the regions being wrapped within the national news has all died away, logistics was the reason for the BBC, but notice how ITV started doing it during the same period as well, and then eventually stopped doing so (they were never as clean on ITV though)

But now ITV are reportedly trying to wrap regional news within the national more than ever before if this 'news hour' idea takes off. Obviously different bosses like different things...

In addition to Sue, I've now seen Martine Croxall, Carole Walker and Julia Somerville all using that backdrop today. Nice!
