I didn't realise they changed it in 1999 to "BBC News at #", thought it came about in 2008 when they decided the BBC News brand needed to be stronger.

With the 1999 revamp it stopped being billed in the Radio Times as "Six O'Clock News" or just "News" in the Radio Times and was always billed as "BBC News" - and the titles always had "BBC News" in them as well instead of the programme names written out. I can live with "BBC News at Ten O'Clock" but I don't like "BBC News at Ten" because there's another programme called that.

Of course, between 1986 and 1988 we had The 1 O'Clock News and The 9 O'Clock News, but also The SIX O'Clock News, which wasn't very consistent.

Well, when they first started referring to bulletins in those terms in 1999, I think Anna and George always used to say "Good afternoon and welcome to the BBC's News at One O'clock" or something to that effect. But Fiona and Huw used to say "Welcome to the BBC News at Six". I guess it just depends on personal preference.

I'm sure it used to be referred to on air as the Six O'Clock News when George and Sophie presented it. But Anna Ford always referred to the One as the BBC's News at One O'Clock. I can't remember about the Ten though.

The 1999 attempt to rename disappeared about then. At the end of the 1 o'clock news, Anna Ford would sign off saying "that's all for the one oclock news this lunchtime". It was also definitely the 10 o'clock news (the 10 o'clock News Hour brand launched around 2005 demonstrates that).

The 2008 rebrand was an attempt to unify BBC News. According to audience surveys, News 24 was considered an inferior service to the national bulletins, thus the name change to have "BBC News" in every bulletin. I suppose sharing N6 also helped unify the two services. I'm not convinced it's worked. I think BBC News is a more unified brand, but I think that's more to do with Lambie-Nairn's designs rather than the name changes.

Chris is right, the 1999 attempt at unifying the brand to "BBC News at X" sort of petered out after a few years and the presenters reverted to saying "X O'Clock News" for the most part. The whole aim of the 2008 rebrand was to re-unify BBC News once more. In fact, the inspiration behind the whole look and sound was 1999 once again. They brought back Lambie-Nairn and told David Lowe to simplify his music. And the graphics which had become rather over the top during the mid-2000s were stripped right back to basics like they were in 1999. All in all, I think it's paid off for them. Yes, the huge mistake was renaming BBC News 24, but overall I think the BBC News brand is as good as it's been for many years now.

I was watching clips of BBC News bulletins from 2007 or so and realised how over the top the graphics and music had become. Whilst I think the current graphics may be a bit too basic, it definitely has helped going back to basics.

I liked the graphics from 2007, I don't know why they had to change it to something simple and basic, maybe because it could be easier for the OAPs to understand and read easily, and to make simulcasts easier to happen

Eh? The graphics have never been unclear to read. The problem was that the way they animated was too fussy. It's often the case in TV that simple is best. And the 2007 music pretty much became a parody. The 1999-2007 music was far more understated and classy, as 2008-present has been. Less is more.

What I'm meaning, is that in 2007 they sort f flashed and curled onto the screen, aka Breaking strap. Unline now, all it does is says breaking news then changes into the story! Idea

I agree with the music but I was a fan of the 2007 graphics. They were much smaller and neater than the predecessor and animated neatly. The main problem was having that coherent look across BBC News, including the regions which are unable to produce graphics anywhere near to News 24's in 2007, hence the simpler look.

I still really don't like the 2008 graphics and haven't done since they arrived. Gill Sans does not look good in text and should be restricted to logos. I also preferred the graphics to stretch right across to the left hand side. There are a lot of slight variations on the live and locator bugs too depending on which studio is in operation, often with the locator being a couple of pixels out of line.

BBC News at 6 moved to BBC2 this evening, due to the cycling. Was this planned or late change?
