As I recall, a similar idea was put in place for the May 1999 rebrand of BBC News, however, it wasn't strictly adhered to like it is now. I may be wrong on this, but I think they became the "BBC News at One", "BBC News at Six" etc. However, the late evening bulletin was still at 9.00pm then so it was "BBC News at Nine". It didn't last long, though and eventually pretty much reverted back to One/Six/Nine/Ten O'Clock News until 2008.

The only presenter who ever really stuck with that that I can remember is Anna Ford, who always used to say that was all from "the BBC News at One O'Clock".

Very well said.

"News at Ten" will always be ITN, and "Ten O'Clock News" will always be the BBC. . . "BBC News" could mean anything from the BBC1 bulletins to local radio news.

BBC News would have been an ideal name, if not for that issue... But whichever way they went, it was always going to involve some sort of compromise in different ways. They were stuck in an awkward position.

Do I prefer one name over the other? Not sure - 'BBC News' in itself is better than ' (BBC) News 24', while the latter did have the advantage of being established as you say, and I can see the strong case in that - but 'The BBC News Channel' is worse than both...

I can see why it was changed, but for the reasons outlined I think any advantage was not clear-cut enough to make it a vital exercise.

I'd have been content to see the BBC News 24 name kept, but especially if it meant the naming of the Nationals was retained. 'News At Ten' is so firmly embedded as ITN's brand that the BBC's use of it carries the association of it being, for want of a better word, inferior. It is not the News At Ten, it's the other one - it cannot equal the same prestige. I'd welcome the return of the 'BBC X O' Clock News' names.

And I note this:

Jonny posted:
Since the 2008 rebrand. Around the same time they became obsessed with any service provided by BBC News having to have "BBC News" unbroken in its name somewhere.

The only part of the 2008 re-naming exercise that I think has been a success is the change to "BBC World News" .

Not quite worked out as planned, then?

Bug, time and ticker appeared at 0108. BBC World News had bug and ticker up before BBC News.

A report presented by what looks to be the Salford studio, North West Tonight, soon to also be Breakfast's.

It was on the BBC News at 6, glad I'm not the only person that noticed.

I really don't like that set, the pale colours make it look like a cheap knock off of a proper BBC News set from some era.

I think the studio maybe seen on an occasional basis. A previous report has also been recorded at Salford. I think it was a science or health reporter so perhaps one is based in Salford.

That report (abbot liver disease, IIRC), was also shown on BBC World yesterday throughout the day.I got the feeling the studio was just a bit *too* red.

The coloured lights looks a bit washed out - but it's similar to what you'll see on Breakfast in a few weeks as opposed to white or NWT Red Wink
