Glad I'm not the only one who remembers the Millbank DTL position. It's been a long, long time since I've seen that on News 24. It must be getting on for 10 years.

The newsroom camera position was re-engineered, I believe, to be a second CSO position for News 24 (not quite self-op but almost) alongside the existing CSO studio at Millbank (which was more operated)

Quote:

Yes, I think you're right, David - I've a vague feeling that Dateline London used to air on Sundays originally too. Gavin Esler was still the presenter at that time but I remember Nik Gowing deputising for Gavin when he was away. Those two were the chief newsreaders on News 24 and World at that time weren't they?

Dateline London started with the late Charles Wheeler presenting, and was broadcast around lunchtime on Sundays from Millbank.

Yes Gavin was the main DL presenter back then. He anchored News 24 in the 19:00 to 00:00 slot on weekdays and before that the 16:00 to 19:00 slot. As for the old News 24 Millbank DTL I don't think it's been seen since the 2004 relaunch of BBC News 24.

Was Gavin a direct replacement to Charles Wheeler who first presented DTL?

I only ever saw DL with Gavin as presenter or Nik Gowing occasionally so not sure if anyone else presented after Charles but before Gavin.

Will be interesting to see how the News Channel and Studio E copes with the first major breaking news story of NBH in Thatchers death...

From a viewers point of view, it looks fine - they've probably had a lot of rehearsals for major news stories

Thankfully no signs of any staff laughing in the background or otherwise behaving in a way that might be seen as inappropriate given the story studio E are covering.

They're probably a bit busy working on the coverage of that story to be laughing or behaving inappropriately......

Not quite sure what happened but BBC News at Six died for a few moments on the BBC News Channel (and I can only assume on BBC World too as it appeared to be a simulcast on all TV news output) at around 18:23. It looked like either they were trying to opt out of the 6 and it went wrong or someone pressed a button they shouldn't have. We were even briefly treated to a shot of Mary Nightingale preparing for the ITV News in Downing Street. It didn't appear to affect BBC One however.

No watching BBC One, we got at 6:30 George pausing then saying "this is BBC News" and a bit of a pause agin before crossing to the weather. It probably would have been better for the channel to opt out at the end of the weather and not go back to recap the news, but I was watching BBC One so I wouldnt know.

But a very nice ending to The Six, it's a shame we got the sting when the local kicked in instead of a silent opening or straight to Stuart. But it was a clean opt for once.

It was at the end of James Landales report there was a promo read by George for BBC News online as soon as George stopped speaking the sting played then cut abruptly back to the 6 before the screen went black for some time loosing the BBC News logo, clock and ticker. About 20 secs or so passed before it returned to the 6. Watch it on live rewind now Wink
