I seem to remember Dead Ringers did a good parody of the giant ITV 'theatre of news' with Jan Raven as Mary Nightingale interviewing the PM at the huge newswall. 'Please Mr Prime Minister you're so big, please don't eat me' Very Happy

Thought that was Jon Culshaw's line as 'Alastair Stewart' ?

Yes, although it was actually John Reid as Home Secretary. My favourite bit was the dig at Alastair Stewart and his "pantomime fashion" of speaking. I've always found him a little overdramatic.

I found a version of the video still online here.

The 'Sian Lloyd' was good. This was done around the time she & Lembit split up.

Given it's on BBC2 - is it really necessary to have Archbishop of Canterbury ceremony on the News Channel??

Roger Mosey, acting director of BBC Vision/Television discussed this with regard to the Pope coverage on BBC One. For major events, audiences are much higher on BBC One/Two simulcasts than they would be if the event were only shown on the News Channel. This suggests that there is still a large chunk of the audience who don't find programmes on the minor digital channels. I know it's crazy objectively, but subjectively I can see why it's done.

I think you misread that noggin, the complaint was that it was on BBC News, not BBC Two.

I can see it saves them money but surely they could be simulcasting with World at the minute (if they must simulcast) who are covering both Obama and Canterbury?

For many years News 24 didn't show PMQs, presumably on the reasoning that BBC2 and BBC Parliament were already showing it. Now they do, presumably reasoning it's the sort of thing they'd be expected to carry. I guess the same is true of the Archbishop thingy although it's less of a "news" event I'd argue.

Doesn't really bother me too much, especially as it's quite clear there isn't enough new content to fill 8 channels anymore post-DQF...

But it's unnecessary on the NC when there's debate about Scotland and The Budget still major prominent news, as well as Obama's speech. A more sensible thing would have been to dip into the important bits, but primarily stick with the normal news agenda!

It does kinda make sense for it to be on the News channel, it is a live news event and that's where probably where it should be. It's also worth remembering that it, along with other channels are on display in places where people can't turn them over - pubs, cafes, public places etc.

Of course it does have to be scheduled on BBC2 too because that means it will be on there, but there was no guarantee the news channel would show it - and they still might duck out of it. Who knows what the news agenda would have been today?
