So, summing up the day.
Nice send off from
TVC, giving the News channel a proper close and
N6 going to black - fitting ending (I hope I never see those Barcos again - for as long as I live).
The good points. I have to start with the studio, it's absolutely fantastic. As has been proved in only a few hours it is really flexible for the nationals/news channel and papers programme. The picture (although in SD) seems sharper and it's nice to see network bulletins in HD on BBC One.
Presenters moving around/standing up. Now, I know I've been a pain on here for years saying that a stood-up
TOTH or stood up presentation from screens with the main presenters, explaining a story with graphics is visually better than being glued to a desk 24/7. BBC News in N6 and Sky News in it's current form show that staying in one place almost constantly with no imagination of camera shots, use of full screen graphics - gets stale. I know it's 'the news' - but if it's as dull as dishwater, people will turn over. As has been shown today - you can be authoritative and be innovative at the same time.
The graphics. The only problem seems to be the Hardtalk graphics don't line up. Other than that, they are clear and do some neat and nice aninmations and are a lot better than the former package which I never liked as they seemed very clunky.
The stings/breakbumpers/coming up sequences - brilliant. They add pace to the channel and act as nice transitions.
The weather on the balcony is wonderful. They just need to tidy up the throwing to the weather as the tractor cam seems a little slow getting to the weather presenter.
The titles, although don't seem in sync - i'm sure will grow on me. I think it's because i've seen them in their former style and still associate them with that.
Conclusion: The channel feels alive again. They've clearly taken the presenation ideas from 2003 and mixed it with the branding package from 2008 and have a visually nice, non stuffy and viewable experience.
They clearly have taken some ideas from Sky News (even in it's former) when throwing to things across the newsroom, the Papers, the coming up sequence - and especially stand up presentation.
All in all I think the best way to sum it up is: 'A much more vibrant and inviting channel'.
