Where does Meet the Author come from? couldn't the breaking come from there?

Studio K in the Bussiness Unit. It is too small and only has the chairs and a coffee table

There have been some very poor decisions and messy stuff on BBC News re Syria over recent days.

On Thursday night the coverage of the vote was just awful. It was happening during the Ten, so the NC should have gone their separate way, or simulcast World (not sure if they were covering). Instead I had to watch Parliament which is just a live feed with no analysis.

When the vote came in at the end of the Ten they were on 'other news' and briefly threw over to an flustered Nick Robinson who wasn't even sure if he'd heard it correctly. Then they closed the programme, had some trails and Clive Myrie popped up as if nothing had just happened before he eventually crossed to Matthew Amroliwala who at last took control.

Last night's 6 was much much better in that they simulcast World for the Kerry speech and then Rajesh Merchandani chaired a discussion with some big hitters - Diplomatic Correspondent, Arabic Editor (great you can get him now in same building) and Security Correspondent. However this was all spoiled when the crashed into the end of the 6 just as Fiona was saying goodbye. One trail would have sorted this - but at least we got the coverage!

You missed the bit where, when they finally cut to the commons to see what was going on, 3 seconds later the commons feed went to a test card as the session was over.

The size of the studio and furniture it has available are minor issues compared to gallery equipment and facilities.

I can't believe this argument is still going on. There's only one real solution - finish the fit out of studio D and it's associated gallery and move London in there, freeing up studio A for the very rare occasions that the NC needs to go it's own way, with presentation, at 10pm. It didn't seem to be that much of an issue in TVC.

Sounds like a good idea, but would BBC be able to staff the extra gallery?

Out of interest would the NC actually have enough staff - and I'm referring to producers as much as gallery staff here - at that time of night to leave the Ten without taking WN? If this really was such a problem, anyway, wouldn't they have sent London to Millbank (at least for the late bulletins) to ensure there was always a studio free at NBH? The fact they didn't says to me they don't regard what happened the other night as a particularly likely event.

On the other hand, would there have been no technical way for the News Channel to have simulcast BBC Parliament, but with audio-only commentary from a correspondent without needing a full news gallery? And if they knew there was a chance the vote would overlap with the Ten, could they not have ensured there was a one-off back-up team at Millbank just in case?

Not really. There may be some staff around on breaks, or who are at the end of shifts. But you can't just fire up a tv studio without enough people to do it.

People have been going on about Salford being able to sustain the News Channel, but that's just a fantasy. They don't have the staffing, and they don't have the most recent content on their servers. The Salford operation is set up for what it does.

You don't put anything to air, ever, without control over it. Your proposal of BBC Parliament pictures with audio commentary is almost what BBC Parliament actually do. But also, the routing of it would be incredibly hard, and not the sort of thing anyone with a brain would either suggest, or attempt.

It sounds like a solution might have been to present coverage of the Commons vote from MB1 and stay there on the NC while Studio E did the Ten.

Expensive though, having to staff Millbank.

Hmmmm
Don't forget that The Ten and Newsnight shared TC7 for a while. The question is, could that happen with studio B as well..

Is a Football transfer story followed by a trail of actor is a soap opera really the top news stories of the day?

Thought the BBC News at six could have different top stories than this.

Perhaps the top story wasn't ready so they went with the second item as the lead. That is quite a common occurrence.

Global news story of the day, just look online. Football is a major UK industry. US is shut for a holiday. Vodafone details only released at 5.30 (in detail).

Would have been surprised if it didn't lead.

There wasn't a trailer over the credits to Pointless, perhaps suggesting the top story either was changed or it was unclear what they would lead on when they would have recorded the trail.
