Why couldn't the News Channel have the News at Ten, The Papers and Sports Day all as normal? Then BBC 1 have the News whenever the football finished. It was a complete mess last night, caused by the BBC covering a game that had new importance to anyone? Why have it on BBC 1? Show it on 2 or 3! It messed the News Channel up and BBC Radio 5 Live, as they now take Question Time.

Well 6m were still watching at 10.45pm so it must have had some interest.

Do you know what is the contract? Of course I don't know. My point was that it was the only game shown on BBC 1 throughout the whole tournament during peak viewing time, with all the other games at that time on BBC 3 from what I am aware of. They didn't show the first semi final on BBC 1, so my point was, why this game? And of course plenty of people watched it, it's the only football currently taking place, so fans starved of the game will watch.
If it had been shown on another channel, then extra time and penalties would have disrupted just that channel, rather than 2 TV channels and a radio station as it did last night.

And events broadcast on BBC One get higher ratings than those broadcast on BBC Two, which in turn get higher ratings than those on BBC Three or Four. It isn't a case of availability, it's more complicated than that. EPG positioning, people's habits etc. play a huge role.
Some sporting organisations will mandate in their rights agreements that their events must be shown on the most popular channel (so that sponsors etc. can be guaranteed high audiences).

Perhaps these organisations should be aware of how broadcasting actually works in the UK!
This insistence an event should be on a certain channel.
Its not the 1960's now!
All four BBC channels are available to all users thesedays, but the Beeb know best!

And p**s off your average viewer who just wants to watch the local news & doesnt give a stuff whether the football is on One, Two, Three or Four & has a IQ high enough to know how to change channels!

I doubt the match was required to be on BBC One, but it was the best team in Europe versus the best team the World, who also happen to be European - I.e. big draw for European football fans, of which there are quite a few in the UK. Italy vs Spain (as it was) is probably the biggest, most relevant to UK audiences, match that the BBC will show since the Euros last year and until the World Cup next year.
