I don't think I've seen them use daytime backdrop on lates but I have seen them use a pitch black backdrop on early breakfast bulletins.
I totally agree with regards to the music though, it's jarring. Pres wise it's gone downhill, there's no longer a wideshot post titles, ever since the headlines went live and it cheapens the broadcast, the graphics themselves seem to have gotten sharper mind since they first introduced them in March.
The set is something you can't do anything about given the space, and looks fine on locked shots - but I do agree in wides the 'tiny' (65 inches) LED panels don't look great, but that might be down to bad camera work by the floor assistant/camera op/cleaner/lighting technician
The whole programme seems a bit lazy presentation-wise. The mixture of music from the previous package and the originally-ditched 2008 stuff is quite jarring and they often use the daytime backdrop in the late bulletins.
