While I'm at it, does anyone have any idea what all those large screen monitors fixed to the walls, in the back office behind the presenters in the old studio are for? As far as I can see all they do all day is scroll the Midlands Today logo.

I believe it's called "set dressing"

And they actually show the BBC News Channel when they're not broadcasting, so they are actually of purpose when there is no programme.

The ones down the far end show a multiviewer output of BBC Channels, there's one of BBC Regions and one of news channels, the rest vary between BBC News and BBC 1 - whatever they're switched to in the gallery.

Personally, I see no reason for more licence payer's money being spent on yet another makeover. When you think that Midlands Today is only broadcast for about hour a day Mon to Fri and just a few minutes at weekends, a new studio is completely unnecessary.

You're right, completely unnecessary. Infact why don't they present the news broadcasts from an abandoned factory to help save money? Sure the factory won't look as nice, and it may have a few homeless people walking in on the shots, but it will help reduce the costs! You never know, they may also be able to stretch to a tin of red paint and make it fit into the 'uniform' BBC News branding.

Or is the paint pushing it a bit? What with the cost it would be to the television licence payers money.....

I assume from your sarcastic reply you're more than happy for you licence fee to be wasted by the BBC. Personally, I'm not.

His point is their previous set was virtually falling down round their ears, it was scuffed to hell and damaged, it looked its age and needed replacing.

Meanwhile BBC North West moved to MediaCity and got 6 103" Plasmas when they had an already functional set back at Oxford Road, why didn't they take it with them? Lose the ceiling lightboxes and it would have fitted, maybe replace the rear-projection screens with plasmas...

If you think a tiny regional set that's been on the cards for 4 years now is the corporation's largest money waster you need a reality check...

Anyone heard anything further on the set front?

I know!! Razz

From what we heard about the backdrop being an image of the Midlands mixed with a newsroom, I wouldn't be surprised to see some plasmas in Midlands Today.

I presume BBC East Midlands Today will be launching a New set as well ?

Surely the set in Nottingham is older than the Birmingham one ?

Nottingham always seems to get left out ;(

No they're current, it was last upgraded in 2010 - though the floor's not been done. I predict new projectors though.

Midlands Today's set is older than Notts' (by a matter of months, though if you're on about bare-bones, Notts was installed with the Great East Midlands ironing board...

To be fair, the NWT studio is also used for Breakfast, so obviously they need to do better than a regional-style studio. It's perfectly understandable IMO.

Shame they didn't though, eh? the one at Oxford Road could have worked 10,000 times better than the mess they got lumbered with (such a high pricetag too!)
