Or maybe they'll just think "ooer something's a bit wrong" and not really care?

There was no indication that something was wrong. The only announcement was that London viewers were joining South East Today viewers. There was no indication if this was planned or if it was a permanent change.

Permanent would be a little unlikely, no?

To a tvforum member, but to a casual viewer how would that be any different to ITV merging regions last year? BBC South East Today has a similar name to Newsroom South East so although I agree that it is unlikely, it is not a far fetched concept at all.

And then what would happen when these viewers assume the worst (which I don't believe they would)? Get up, grab a pitch-fork and march to Television Centre? No. They'd switch on again at 6 and realise they'd been mistaken, breathe a sigh of relief and carry on with their lives.

Did someone say something about sandwiches?

Perhaps TV presenters should also explain they're not actually 7 inches tall and living inside the magic box in your front room, you know, for the casual viewer.

Ok in the past it wasn't as easy to find out why but if someone goes online and for example look on twitter you can see someone from the programme will have made a comment, such as Julie Etchingham mentioned some time back that the studio lost power and they were heading to another studio. In this case on Twitter today BBC London twittered that they had a technical problem and were hoping to be back for 6.30.

Not everyone can go online and know what to look for but you would know about it if the BBC merged any regions. A couple of minutes for headlines, it thoughtful enough they welcomed London viewers in such a short amount of time they had on air.

If BBC London fails to appear at 6.30 and South East Today were again notified I am sure they will inform viewers with a bit more information at an appropriate point.

You can never underestimate the desire of certain classes of British society to grab a pitchfork and a can of petrol and go marching for justice.

And London news returns.

Surprised they didn't make it on-air for the 3.00 summary - BBC London is in a better position than most regions if there are studio problems and a bit of notice in that they could probably arrange to decamp to N9 at TV Centre.

I guess their argument would be moving to TVC for one bulletin (assuming they knew they'd be fixed by 6:30) would be very expensive and unpractical for a fairly short bulletin. I'm sure they would have come from N9 had they not been ready for 6:30.
