@Mouseboy - I think the point is that the studio isn't just there to look pretty. The space is used by all the journalists and statisticians who sit within it and work hard. I guess in this era of high-connectivity they could all be sat in the BH newsroom, with Dimbleby in Studio E, with others dotted about the place, but why change what has worked for years. Plus, it has come to be expected that the BBC will have a big set.

I know what the point of the set is. I thought we were talking about presentation, right? I just dont like the way it looks. Thats my opinion. The set they used in years past was great. I dont like this one very much. Its a big OTT for my taste.

No need to be quite so aggressive! I actually agree with you about the set (as mentioned in the rest of my post) - I think it's a bit busy this time, but await seeing it properly on the night. It's just easy to forget that the BBC don't put on the colosseum view for the hell of it - there's good reason for using the biggest studio space in the UK.

Did anyone watch the 60 Years of Swing programme? Not as good as Swingtime but amazing to see David Butler interviewed, now in his 90s but still looking well and was involved right from the first ever BBC elections in the 1950s. Cliff Mitchelmore's still alive too at 95, although I haven't seen him on TV for a while - he last hosted a BBC Parliament night in 2007.

Barring several irritating comedians (clearly just commenting on a piece of footage they'd just seen minutes earlier) there were some good archive clips. The extended look at "the girls" in 1964, Richard Dimbleby commenting on various female staff members as the camera zooms in on them one by one, seems absolutely unbelieveable now.

Nice to see BBC Northern Ireland following the national branding for a change, in the past they have usually just done what they wanted in terms of presentation.

Unfortunately their election night set, which was unveiled for the Sunday Politics, bears no resemblance to thr national look whatsoever.

That's actually the normal BBC Newsline studio relit, although the desk does suggest it will double as their election studio this time around too. This seems a bit odd as normally I think they come from a special studio, and it's not like studio space is an issue as they use enough of them! They use four different sets for Sunday Politics (which bears no resemblence to the main set despite being the only programme to use it!), Newsline, The View and Stormont Today (which also uses some old BBC News music as the theme), and I'm fairly sure that all bar Newsline come from a different, fairly big studio.

The election set is indeed a re-dressed Newsline studio, which had been the case for a number of years now - certainly for General and Assembly elections. Since 2014 they've used a particularly gaudy blue-themed set which has had absolutely nothing in common with the national offering.

As far as I'm aware The View and Sunday Politics share a separate studio in Broadcasting House. Stormont Today uses a small studio in Parliament Buildings itself.

Does that mean that we will only get SD coverage and not HD as it won't be coming from BBC Blackstaff Studio A then?

BBC NI did the same last year for the Local and Euro elections - just re-panelled some of the Newsline set which had the globes on it, changed the lighting brought in the Election 'desk' which has been used since 2007 - all controlled from the same gallery.

The View is from a different studio and was the old Sunday Morning Live set but re-lit but uses the BBC Newsline gallery.

Was this studio for the 2011 Assembly elections a one off then?

If that's a slightly redressed Newsline set it's been hidden very well as it looks completely different! It's got different flooring, a additional desk area and it generally looks bigger than the normal Newsline set, and incidentally it's the set I've been imagining NI use for all their elections, although from the sounds of it that's not the case.

The giveaway is when Newsline comes from the election set in the week leading up to election night. This was certainly the case in 2010.

You'll notice that the flooring is significantly different for Newsline at the moment - if you check out tonights bulletins on iPlayer, you'll see the purple carpet under the main desk rather than the usual raised platform.

But yes, I know what you mean about that 2011 set. Not 100% sure on that one.

Although the main Newsline studio is deceivingly big.

That's a different studio but the Newsline gallery can control both depending on how it's switched.

That studio had been used for elections for a few years, now it's just the current studio redressed with a different desk and panels.

Love that the stairs is in the NBH style too.

I thought Sophie Raworth was the newsreader on the night?

She possibly is - but it'll come from BH for sure. She's manning the map being constructed outside BH.

I do enjoy the Monday before Election Night because it's when we tend to get our first look at the BBC's election studio. It's a nice look, but the background for the head-on shot is a tad busy.

One thing that might have been good is if Huw referred to it as the BBC's "election centre", like Dimbleby did at the start of the 2014 local elections coverage. To the average viewer, "election studio" is quite mundane, whereas "election centre" is more punchy - and indeed, probably more accurately reflects what's going on in the background.

It seems BBC World News will simulcast the tommorrow's Election coverage from BBC1 and BBCNC. (Source: BBC World News at 1000 BST)
