BBC drops interactive news bulletin
The BBC has called time on the Ten O’Clock News Extra interactive service, after seven months on air, ending what it describes as an “experiment”.

Billed as the world’s first interactive television news bulletin, the service apparently failed to attract sufficient audience to justify its cost, in spite of heavy in-programme promotion on the flagship evening bulletin.

I quite liked it really, it's a shame that they had to axe it.

Why doesn't the BBC and other broadcasters realise that none of us likes pressing the sodding red button! Evil or Very Mad

I actually like using red button apps and interactive gubbins - I find them very useful - especially apps like BBCi weather and Sky News Active(although the slowness of my Freeview box gets on my nerves at uni!)

It's a shame 10 o clock extra is going - it was a nice suppliment to the bulletin.

NEWSWATCH:

you say you liked the 10 extra, but did you actually watch or read anything on it?

I like Germany, but I don't want to live there; if you see what I mean.

You're quick off the mark - this was in the Media Guardian last week.

The trouble was on Freeview (and Cable) it was dropped if any other interactive programmes were running.

Not so bad for special events - but before Christmas it was dropped for a BBC3 feature looking at shop windows! Now which is more important?

I think running it for just the 10pm bulletin was also a mistake - they should have switched the feed to BBC2 at 10.30pm and made it accessible during Newsnight too.

Sorry, I didn't see it in the MediaGuardian, I was just browsing through blinkx and found this; I thought it might be of interest.

I liked the BBC Ten o' Clock News Extra service because it was more in depth than the actual news bulletin, for example there was quite a small story covered in the main bulletin but featured in full on the interactive service, which I felt was a good feature.

I wouldn't say that I had any reason to dislike the service and no doubt, what it offered was a useful, more in-depth look on stories of interest, but to be honest, it seemed to me, like a lot of interactive stuff, as created just because the technology exists to create such a thing.

Personally, if I see a story on a regular news bulletin that takes my interest and I want to find out more, then I'll just flick over to one of the rolling news channels, bbc.co.uk or elsewhere. I've never found that I can't find what I want when it comes to finding out more about a particular news story and given that 10 O'Clock News Extra was only available on digital TV (obviously), then anyone who had the ability to view it would also be able to find plenty of information elsewhere. IMO BBC News Interactive or Sky News Active are more than sufficient, for anyone who doesn't have access to the web or prefers to stay sat at their TV.
