Didn't hear much of M&L but Moyles simply played a lot of music - no involvement of Dave, Will or Lizzie as would have been regular at the time. He just sounded very serious and kept you up to date with the newsbeat headlines, which I think were every 15 minutes, and also did some more relaxed chats with the newsbeat presenter about what had happened, rather than relying on the news bulletins to tell all. It doesn't sound much but when I turned over to Radio City and they had the drivetime guy obviously very excited this had happened on his shift and was going rather tastelessly OTT about the details of the attack....jeez. Moyles did well in that respect.
Later on he also spoke to some guy in America, I think his name was "American Joe" or something similar, he was a regular correspondent at the time.
Moyles is a very talented broadcaster - he makes what he does look simple - like he just turns up and spouts off but he puts in the work to make it happen. He also is a radio man from a kid and that makes a difference - he is not your average ILR jock. He does know when to be serious and when to take the mick ... he is like Wogan is some ways - breaks some radio rules but for some reason it works. I think he has got better and better as time has gone on.

Someone should probably start another thread but does anyone know how the likes of Radio 1 coped with September 11th. It should have been Mark and Lard on the air followed by Chris Moyles. Neither are exactly famous for serious broadcasting

AGREED : Moyles is a true radio broadcaster and was able to maintain professional music radio broadcasting for the week after 9/11.
As for Diana's death . . . Mark & Lard were on breakfast . . except were on holiday . . and Kevin Greening (LEGEND) was filling in. Radio 1 kept Kevin at Breakfast for another week, giving M&L another week off cos Kevin handled R1 breakfast show brilliantly in the week after Diana's death.
This led to Kevin getting the breakfast show with Zoe Ball later in the year.

I thought M&L were told to take the week off after Diana's death? Agree about the LEGEND comment too.

I haven't got the Simon Garfield book to hand, but IIRC weren't they due back on the Monday after the funeral but told to take the week off and let Kevin carry on.

Interesting that everyone went mad when Diana - a royal by marriage, was killed, but these scenes weren't repeated when Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother - two blood royals, met their end. I don't think we'll even see a reaction anything like this when the Queen pops her clogs.
As was pointed out earlier, I think we did go mad when Diana died. The "mass grief" was fuelled by guilt-ridden red-tops attempting to show (all too late) contrition for having hounded the woman for years or failing that was hijacked by people wanting to feel good about themselves. Yes, Diana's death was tragic. But if we need any further proof as to how we "lost it" that week, supermarkets who originally weren't going to close on the day of the funeral eventually changed their mind after receiving death threats. Yes, you did read that correctly.
I don't mind telling you that I "opted out" of the mass grief that week, seeing right through it.

Who was presenting on Sky News?
Martin Stanford. I happened to see it live, as I'd just got in from clubbing.
Sky were first to break it in the UK. Martin was told in his ear, and looked very shocked relaying the news.
The video clips were available on Jim Edward's TV World site, but they're not available... does anyone have these clips??
