Slightly off topic, but does anyone know how the death of Princess Margaret was reported? I remember ITV doing a news flash at 1130 with Katie D, but the announcement was a couple of hours earlier.

News came through around 8.30, at which point BBC1 joined with BBC2 who were showing Weekend 24 (or may have been Breakfast by that point). The CBBC cartoon was faded to black, followed by a long balloon ident.
After a while, BBC2 left and went to The Saturday Show (displaced from BBC1). Then, around 10am, TSS switched back to BBC1.
GMTV on the other hand were locked into the pre-recorded GMTV Kids sequence (I don't think they even had a news bulletin on weekends by that point), so the first announcement was when ITV1 came on air at 0925, and there was a one minute news flash before SMTV. In the Granada region at least there was national continuity from London - presumably a lot of the regions had no announcers available till lunchtime seeing as they weren't required for SMTV/CDUK.
I was 12 when Diana died. I woke up at 6am in the morning and put GMTV on, but didn't expect to see the news of Diana's Death. I then flicked over to BBC1 and sat in a stunned silence all morning watching the BBC coverage, then went out for a bike ride in the afternoon.
Someone should probably start another thread but does anyone know how the likes of Radio 1 coped with September 11th. It should have been Mark and Lard on the air followed by Chris Moyles. Neither are exactly famous for serious broadcasting
Didn't hear much of M&L but Moyles simply played a lot of music - no involvement of Dave, Will or Lizzie as would have been regular at the time. He just sounded very serious and kept you up to date with the newsbeat headlines, which I think were every 15 minutes, and also did some more relaxed chats with the newsbeat presenter about what had happened, rather than relying on the news bulletins to tell all. It doesn't sound much but when I turned over to Radio City and they had the drivetime guy obviously very excited this had happened on his shift and was going rather tastelessly OTT about the details of the attack....jeez. Moyles did well in that respect.
Later on he also spoke to some guy in America, I think his name was "American Joe" or something similar, he was a regular correspondent at the time.
"Please turn to Sky News for an important announcement from Buckingham Palace"
Or UK Gold had 'Please turn to BBC1'
At the time, UK Gold was re-running Worzel Gummidge, its first re-run since the C4 showing in 1986/87. Thankfully I still had my original recording of that day's episode and did not need to make a replacement copy...

The subject of captions over regular programming reminds me of drunkenly returning home to find Saddam Hussein had been executed, BBC One was continuing with the Sign Zone with a massive "Major Breaking News on BBC Two Now" strap. BBC Two was obviously simulcasting with N24 but it must have been odd for anyone who recorded the sign zone that night when they watched it back.
There was no Sign Zone at the time...and the Learning Zone was then weekends only.

I remember up to the TOTH that morning News 24 were fading in and out of a simple white-on-black BBC News logo. Also, the same sombre graphics set was used that was seen during the announcement of the Queen Mum's death.
I also seem to remember there was a very strange feeling throughout the broadcast that morning that they weren't quite sure exactly what tone to set, she was an important royal but not
that
important.

I remember the music on BBC Radio 1 being so nice that I actually recorded quite alot of it. I used to listen to it in the car on my long journey from Plymouth to Stockton each weekend for quite a few weeks afterwards.
I probably still have the tapes somewhere, it would be quite nice to listen to them again now it's 10 years later.

I don't suppose you'd fancy encoding any of it?! I'd love to hear some of Radio 1's output on some of the occasions mentioned.
