No one seen the Breakfast advert, I think it aired this afternoon before Doctors or after.

Yes, it's linked to the BBC's adverts for political coverage across the news programmes. Louise was the VO for it.There was one for News at Six as well.

Why are they doing them?
Surely they don't need to trail news programmes

They occasionally do random news trailers just to promote the output. It is nothing more than to keep the profile of news quite high. Agreed that it is completely pointless.

"It's nothing more than to keep the profile of News quite high" followed by "I agree it's completely pointless." Confused

Riddle me this. The Ten averages what, 4-6m, which leaves quite a few doing other stuff, mostly tracking line-up changes on Sky News. It's going to take a bit of persuading to drag them away from that, no?

In regions which have completed DSO and have had their network feeds re-configured to take out all of the analogue stuff, yes.

The reason it's done as a cut is because of the way that regions were configured for dual running of analogue and digital. There are separate network feeds coming from London to the regions for analogue (in 4:3, known as NET1) and digital (16:9, known as DNET1). DNET1 has digital encoding and is delayed with respect to NET1.

In regions that haven't been DSO'd yet they work from NET1 and do a soft opt, by selecting network programmes on their mixers, going "into circuit" and then cutting to local sources when the director calls the opt. The digital opt happens when the network feed is no longer selected on the vision mixer (controlled by the same system which triggers red tally lights on cameras). For that reason it has to be a cut between network and local material.

So in a pre-DSO region (which is effectively just North East now? Northern Ireland is a nation with a proper presentation desk so works in a different way) if they did what you suggest with a wipe, it would be seen on analogue and digital would cut when the transition was over.

Don't forget the still pre DSO South East region (Tunbridge Wells).

BBC Southampton seem to be using DNET1 to opt evenings, but the old analogue NET1 in the mornings still.
There's the familiar flash of soggy PAL leaking through for a few frames at the opt out point in the mornings, but not in the evenings, and I've also witnessed a split Audio/Video opt at 22:00hrs too.

Really enjoying Breakfast these days now they've settled in and really warming to Charlie and Louise. I caught the interview with Gaz Coombes this morning, and noticed quite a few new camera angles and moving shots throughout. The video is online on the Breakfast website.

Those tight close-ups can still catch me by surprise me though!

I definitely agree. Breakfast does feel fresher and the presenter combinations work really well indeed. Louise is really great and she has such a good balance between the light and serious elements of the programme. Her partnership with Charlie is actually really good. I think all the presenters just strike that well balanced tone to the programme.

I knew that all the initial problems with cameras would quickly disappear and the camera angles show the degree to which the studio can actually be flexible when more varied angles are used.

I actually think the current look is much better than the last look. It feels lighter and fresher like a morning programme should. I prefer Charlie & Louise to Bill & Susanna, they work better as a pairing and seem to run more smoothly through the programme.

Also, I still don't like the tight shot of the two presenters, hopefully they'll stop using it altogether soon. Also, I don't mind the smallness of the studio anymore, it actually feels nicer to watch than the huge TC7.

Yes! You make lots of good points there. The studio feels much cosier - it was always weird to see Steph with the business in TC7 a long way away. It's been said that they don't desperately need a large space, and this studio shows that (bar the height!) the dimensions of the studio more than suffice, I feel.

Bill & Susanna need a bit more time to bed in I feel, but with time, I'm hoping that their on-screen rapport will be more natural.

I know everyone complained first about the garish backgrounds and lights, but looking back on TC7, the colours were so washed out (and the studio overly bare) that the vivid plasma backdrop and the other lighting arrangementsstrike a better atmosphere for a morning programme. The designer of the Breakfast backdrop, Jim Mann, remarked that the Barcos in TC7 couldn't replicate golds and oranges very well, and the plasmas now in Salford have great colour reproduction. Plus, in HD, it looks even better.

Steph is closer simply down to the fact that she is now camera right. Previously the extra distance in TC7 was down to the size of the graphic behind her adding greater distance. It should be remembered that business in TC7 was not part of the original concept or design as it came from the Stock Exchange and weather from the BPG, so these elements were an add-on to help reduce costs.
Regarding the backings (and the Barcos were always pretty awful), there is extra distance between the presnters and the screens in TC7, so the lens optics and DOF work differently to Salford.

Bill joined in 2001, Susanna in 2006, and they spent at least two years presenting weekends together, with numerous appearances together since. Exactly how long do they need to 'bed in'?

I didn't know they had presented for several years together at weekends. There aren't any clips hardly of their weekend appearances on the programme. I guess it's taking a while for me to adjust to Bill without Sian, although I always preferred Susanna Very Happy I'll retract my comment!

Yes, I found that a bit odd. Can't think of any reason why she would do that.
