This sunday: Roger Johnston and Sally Nugent.

Sally, yes completely.

Roger, no and NEVER again. I said that the first time, and they obviously haven't read our criticisms of him on here. How about Nicholas Owen, Jon Kay?

They need a couple more male relief presenters, if/when they get rid of Roger from Breakfast.

Did you really expect them to?

I don't think I've ever said anything about him - and I have to say he isn't bad. I certainly prefer him to Jon Kay.

Neither of them are so awful that they should never work on television news ever again.

My comment was, as should be with many posts on the forum, to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Well, I watch Roger every weeknight on NWT so I feel I qualify to give my opinions of him. He's perfectly fine on that programme, the only really personality that you have to show is at the end. Tough act following Gordon, and by no means perfect, but doesn't put me off watching NWT at all.

With the Breakfast audience, firstly it's national, and also requires a certain kind of personality. He tried, by all means, and I know it is testing to have any form of credible chemistry with Fiona, whom he only just met. But I just don't think he worked. Simple, some people just don't. Just a bit wooden and a bit too slow. Who knows, he could be different with Sally on Sunday.

Jon Kay has had more experience presenting the programme, so it's unfair to directly compare the two presenters with their contrasting number of appearances on the show. Also, I have to say that Jon was great last weekend, considering it was his first time in the Salford studio and hasn't been on Breakfast for a little while after reporting on the anniversary of Titanic, which is his normal job.

And to be clear, I was talking specifically and solely about Roger. I'm by no means criticising or discussing any other Breakfast presenter. I think the rest are absolutely great when they present the programme, that's including the relief presenters, who have done very well from the ones we've seen from Salford before.

I'm simply saying I don't think the number of people bashing Roger on here reflects his ability - he really isn't as bad as some on here make out.

I'd probably agree with you, since a number of the comments may have come from people who don't watch him regularly or each night and have made opinions without really considering him with fairness. This was inevitable, given that he is successor to Gordon. Yes, perfectly fine for NWT, but I'm just saying from a pool of 3 other male reliefs, I think the programme could do the best thing to not use his services on the programme again and keep the faces to already recognised ones who are more familiar with the demands of Breakfast.

I will happily admit I have am not a regular viewer of NWT and haven't seen Roger on a night in night out basis. However, whenever I see any clip of him he just looks awkward. I wasn't impressed by him on breakfast the other week, and when he did the relief shifts on the news channel a couple of years back he was awful. Let's be honest - I won't judge him on NWT, but he is not in the same league as Nicholas Owen/Simon McCoy/Jon Kay et al. Breakfast is supposed to be a senior role within news, and I do not feel Roger is good enough for it.

Yes, exactly. Especially the final point. Roger just hasn't cut his teeth for long enough nationally. From his past experience on the News Channel, he didn't show himself to be very competent.

I doubt will ever acquire the personality needed to present Breakfast either.

Are they using the tight shot of the presenters anymore? (The shot below)

I didn't see them use it this morning or yesterday and seem to be adopted the old wider ' TVC style' shot.

Personally I do prefer the wider shot because it feels much less cramped and it more reminiscent of the TVC studio which always had the presenter shot at that particular distance.

I was watching NWT, until recently, and Roger is very awkward at presenting Television news. He also looks very uncomfortable on the sofa, plus it doesn't really help that I don't rate his co-anchor, Ranvir, as a decent news presenter either. Put both together and it final drew me over to Granada Reports a few weeks ago - I gave him plenty of time and just not grown on me, at all.

Yes Gordon was hard to replace, but saying that so was Stuart Hall and John Mundy previously.

I've noticed this as well, I think they've come to their senses and ditched that tight 2 shot.

Just spotted this on BBC News - Breakfast lives on in N6.

How about this for a quick fix for the Salford set:

*

Use the white pillars as lightboxes with a transparent image in front of them, much like the old Look North (Leeds) set.

Put those slices of the logo that are on the screens onto the pillars (and get rid of them from the screens). This should mean that a more aesthetically pleasing wide shot can be achieved, and the presenters can move a few inches further apart meaning that a close up shots can be used without them showing big expanses of white pillar.

I think another solution could be this:

Position the camera slightly to the side and zoom in for a single shot of each presenter, like I have boxed. It's a little squeezed but I don't think it's too difficult, especially if the presenters sat a little further apart.

They changed the 2-headed shot to include the light boxes after the first couple of days:

That was mentioned on the Newswatch edition about Breakfast's move. They had listened to people's comments.

It's an even wider shot now than as shown in the pic above.

Previously (around 2004, perhaps) , people complained that the two presenters were too far apart as there was a plant pot between them. There was some great fanfare about the plant being removed and the current style of sofa introduced.

Perhaps people should send in measurements of EXACTLY how far apart they want the presenters to be: the BBC could then do a poll and just come up with a democratically-decided distance. Razz

The wide they use now is fine, it would just be nice to have some close ups of the presenters when it's appropriate, which is awkward as they're so close together the shot has the other presenter's shoulder in shot.
