I don't understand the necessity of always having 2 presenters in shot, when one speaks, the other just looks uncomfortable most of the time.

If the director is minded, and the presenters have chemistry - there could be playful and interesting interaction between them, making the show feel lighter and more welcoming. (That's how I see it anyway)

Do you really want light and welcoming though when discussing wars or unemployment figures?

(Another way of saying light and welcoming is dumbed down and stupid, tbh.)

Katty and Christian always manage to have the lighter moments when appropriate on beyond 100 days and that's across an ocean...

Newsroom South East from Elstree can't possibly have been the first/only thing in the whole history of television with the "idle" co-presenter in a two-shot doing the triangluar head movement thing, surely? So, why is the habit specifically named after that programme?

Weren't they one of the first programmes to get a set where the two presenters were sat right next to each other rather than some distance apart?

The other theory is that there was a training department at Elstree who may have taught the technique.

It does depend on the type of morning show you are putting out there. When it started it was light hearted similar to This Morning, more magazine than pure news. Then it flip flopped between pure news, business focus, and then in 2000 they had a separate news presenter with their own corner of the set. So they could shift tones as needed.

At the moment the show seems to be a slightly expanded news bulletin with interviews. Whether or not that works best with two presenters is down to the producer and director's choices. I was just commenting on why I think the choice is made to have a single host, or more than one.

Can't help but feel this can't be beat with an early morning feel, and simplicity and freshness...

The music feels almost like a gentle alarm clock, and even the set had a nice friendly feel.

I have to say, I much preferred the look and theme music that came after that one:

Best theme tune Breakfast ever had, IMO.

Yes, he filled in a couple of times as I recall over the summer holiday period in 2003. Around the same time (maybe a few years before) they used to drag Michael Peschardt over from Australia to fill in over the summer! It was always nice to see some new faces and I much preferred the programme back then to it's current state of affairs. At least it had decent presenters who didn't get on your nerves. Nearly every contemporary presenter (news, business and sport included - except Charlie Stayt and Carol Kirkwood) is incredibly smarmy/smug and highly irritating in my opinion!

One of the best David Lowe BBC themes in general from back when the show had authoritative presenters. The current bunch is below par indeed, no wonder people are turning over to Piers.

So could two blokes ever present it?

Look East was often presented by Stuart White and Kim Riley in the past.

Dependant on things like presenter availability and last-minute sickness etc, yes they could.
