I'm pretty sure the area has been used as a studio before, because it looked familiar, but I can't remember what for.

It's been used for tennis coverage I think, Aussie Open or something like that ?

Definitely not this year or last. I'd have a clearer memory if it was for tennis.

IIRC it was used for World Figure Skating Championships highlights with Katherine Downes and Robin Cousins.

Forgot to mention, Breakfast was lit differently again last week during a Torvill and Dean interview:

It looked good.

Yes, it was nice. They used the same on another report about the Winter Olympics.

Doesn’t make the studio look any less awkward though.

I never really understood why they chose to make the screens go inwards, like a 'V' shape. Really odd design. Even if the studio is shaped like that you'd just lose some space to create an 'L' shape.

I think that's because the studio is actually shaped like that? Behind the screens is a blackout curtain which hides the glass windows looking out to Salford. I assume they followed the shape of the studio rather than make an L shape because the space is tight enough as it is - making the screens straight would bring most of it even closer to the sofa and where the camera space is.

I thought it was L shaped, but the wide angle lens required for the wide shot distorts it?

I believe this is the rough location and shape of the studio

You can work out the rough shape by comparing the lighting bars in the ceiling that are placed at right angles to each other and the layout of the screens. A significant amount of space would be lost by straightening out the screens.

The wide angle lens makes it worse, but if you look at the lighting rig, it's obvious that the back wall isn't perpendicular to the left hand wall of the set.

I think you'd even struggle to describe the studio as 'L shaped'n unless you write very strange Ls.

Looking at it carefully like that, it's obvious how terrible a setting that is for a studio. No matter what shot they try, there is always miles and miles of lighting rig visible on screen. The angles are horrible, it feels cramped and claustrophobic. Such a pity they left TC7 for Salford just to tick a box.
