Looks like a new newsroom DTL loop to me, interesting orange logo/graphic on the screens in the background..

#subtlehint

Edit: Also apologies for Farage.

Hopefully if this is a hint of the new look BBC Breakfast then we should see a new studio soon. The current one is horrible, too bright, too small, in your face and not enough room for decent pan shots. Mind you the same can be said for the ITV news studio!

We all know what the best outcome would be, for Breakfast to share the main BBC Sport studio. It looked absolutely fantastic for the Olympics.

Neither of which are going to happen. Doesn't mean the idea hasn't been thought of. It's about £ and lack thereof really.

For those who don't remember that far back this was our studio before the 2011 move to the Quays.

Compare the size of that set to the one we have now and BBC North West has just as much right to feel short changed as BBC Breakfast does.

So if there is any right in this whole who gets a new set in Salford first, think of BBC North West before BBC Breakfast.

Thank you.

With the studio there and not significantly used during the airtime wouldn't have thought they'd be huge cost implications but appreciate these things are never that straightforward.

Still no news of the BBC set for the Olympics but would love them to kick out sports news for the fortnight and give the studio some serious airtime.

The cost is in staffing, I suspect, as the Sport studio is not equipped for a long rolling news programme. When they used it for the Olympics they were running both galleries together, that is not sustainable on a regular basis.

Size isn’t everything though (that’s what I always say). They didn’t exactly use all that space well.

Just imagine what you would have got if Breakfast wasn't using the space as well. The days of big regional news studios have well and truly gone.

Unless a new "set" is confined to new graphics on the screens, it's pretty much guaranteed that any updated set will be for both programmes to share, as per the present arrangement.

I do hope that both programmes get a new set sometime soon. I know the studio is an odd shape, I know the ceiling/lighting grid are low but to me the set itself is really very bland and has been since it was installed. It's not a very natural fit for the curved sofa either, the angles and spacing between the screens always look a bit odd to me.

It'd be nice to see something curved if it's possible in that space - I think it would fit the sofa better and it's more in keeping with recent regional sets. There seems to be a lot of wasted space at the opposite end to the main sofa area as well, where there are currently just lighting boxes.

Indeed, the BBC Spotlight studio is a perfect example of a well laid out studio in a small space. I believe its the same size at NWT/Breakfast studio but it feels more organised/airy, where as the NWT//Breakfast studio is odd shaped, disorganised and therefore doesn't allow for decent angles. Myself I would move the sofa to the current Business area, maybe with the presenters at a 45 degree angle allowing for a camera to separate presenters.

The Spotlight studio is a proper studio, with the lighting grid at the correct height, unlike the Breakfast / North West Tonight studio, which is actually converted office space, so the lighting rig is technically too low.

Eh? The Spotlight studio in Plymouth, like Southampton, is not a small space. It was built in the era when the BBC thought they could make networks shows like 'Question Time' in the English regions. (The idea was that local news would come from the presentation studios that English regions also had back in the day). Spotlight's studio was built as a proper studio - with a full height lighting grid etc.

Spotlight in Plymouth and South Today in Southampton both have much larger studios than most other English regions, including North West Tonight/Breakfast, which these days are usually in converted office space (like Breakfast/NWT are)

(AIUI the Spotlight studio is roughly similar in floor area to Southampton - which is 1900 ft2 or around 180m2.)

What gives you the idea they are similar sizes? Seriously - they aren't.

The Breakfast/NWT studio is a lot smaller, and a very awkward shape.

The odd morning I happen to be awake and up for a breakfast, and I noticed BBC Breakfast ended quite abruptly for Winterwatch. Is this a new regular thing? If it is, it’s a bit dull to leave without a goodbye.
