6 years is already overdue... I am hoping for a move back to London. We shall see Wink

And where would they go in London?
TVC is full up. Go back to any of the basement studios at BH and all you would be doing is swapping one small back drop on screens studio in Salford for one in London.
Suppose you could use Studio E on the plaza, but I guess the reaction of the scene shifters having to swap a green sofa for a red one and then the sectional pieces of the 'One' logo out of the way of the windows, and back again 11 times per week..

The One Show studio isn't Studio E... And the letter elements inside the studio are not currently moveable... (Sunday Morning Live cover them up)

Scene shifting wouldn't be a major issue - Film 2010 onwards managed it, as did Rip Off Britain Live, Front Row, Proms Extra etc. which all came from that studio. It does cost money to pay people to do it though... There is a lighting solution to cope with daylight programmes during the winter, when the studio doesn't have permanent Neutral Density film on the windows, which is used by Sunday Morning Live.

Bigger issue though is that News probably wouldn't want to pay BBC Television for using the studio, and the current studio set-up doesn't use the News automation systems (and I doubt BBC Television would want to compromise their control room and re-engineer it to run in both automated and non-automated modes)

Of course News could do a 45 minute 0830-0915 show there if they wanted to - but I don't think there is any appetite to do so. Breakfast is a successful show at the moment - so why change it and make it more expensive?

Also - given that the BBC committed to a minimum head count in Salford (I believe a requirement of receiving regional development funds) which department would you move in to Salford if you moved Breakfast out?

A move back to London would give the Daily Mail months of stories of the BBC ‘wasting’ money on a ‘failed’ project in moving to MediaCity. Aside from that, there seems to be little reason to move back to London. Breakfast is still miles ahead of GMB in the ratings, they still get a good calibre of guests and the show seems to have settled in quite nicely in Salford with few (if any) set backs.

The size of the Breakfast/NWT studio is an issue but it isn’t as though there’s a lack of possibility. The sports centre made a great home for Breakfast last summer and I’m sure a slight rejig of sports output would be able to accommodate that. Also the original planned studio in the street level space (while deemed unsuitable in 2012) could be made into a good home for the show given some imagination. I’ve been in the space in question and it could make a pleasant studio for a morning show. MediaCity is a beautiful place in the mornings and is well lit in the dark so the windows wouldn’t have the ‘Daybreak effect’ of a pure black background. The issue Daybreak had was that it didn’t incorporate the windows into a set, it was just all window. With some imagination I feel that space would make a far superior studio than Breakfasts current home.

A studio move would fix the majority of things with the show. It's very stale in its current form. Near to zero changes have been applied in 6 years bar a coming up sting. 2018 needs to be the year it changes. GMB have rallied in the ratings, personally I still don't find it watchable, although they do very well with Breaking News. Where would they go in London.... I'd move Victoria to the ONE studio and Breakfast into studio B. #2018wishes

I can't envisage the BBC doing a volte-face on BBC Breakfast any time soon for all the reasons mentioned above. It's still leading in the ratings (even if Good Morning Britain has gained some traction) and the format has proved its resilience, surviving key changes in its on-screen personnel (initially Sian Williams and Chris Hollins and then, arguably more notably, Susanna Reid and Bill Turnbull).

The only advantage I could see in returning to London is a better calibre of guests on the sofa... but the viewing figures suggest this doesn't necessarily deter viewers.

That's not to say a refresh of the show's current set and look wouldn't be welcome, though.

And you're paying the relocation costs of 100 plus staff with what? Magic beans....when BBC News faces another multi million round of cuts next year. Utterly delusional.

I don’t think Victoria would work at all in Studio E. The production team wanted a flexible, dynamic space that could accommodate almost anything they wanted to throw at the programme. 20 guests. Audience. Wheelchairs. Debate. Multiple remote contributors. None of those things could be easily managed in E.

Getting 2x the viewing figures is more than leading, GMB is rating in line with Dan Lobb era Daybreak.... The rest is tabloid spin by Piers.

The GMB gains are still minor. Lot of hot air from Piers, but when was the last time they got 1.5m?

I agree with you and Cando!

But whether we want to admit it or not, Good Morning Britain's viewing shares at least have noticeably risen in recent months to near-consistent 20%, even if that is half of Breakfast's share at around 37 - 40% and the viewing figures themselves now regularly exceed 700,000. I'm pretty sure, year on year, Good Morning Britain is up.

And I say this as someone with no interest in the "look at me" clickbait, attention grabbing ethos of the show. I've always preferred BBC Breakfast and pleased it's still some way out in front. By the same token, I don't think the BBC should slide into complacency over it.

I hardly think calling me delusional is appropriate AT ALL! Watch your manners, it's a forum, not a playground.

Its clear from recent events across the BBC that politics, gender/ethnic targets and worthyness are far more important to production decisions. A London move for Breakfast would have to be balanced by a pretty big headline move the other way.
