They're down to present some editions of Olympic Breakfast together as well.

It's interesting that people are complaining about Victoria Derbyshire being absent from her programme so much.

Yet Dan Walker has missed a significant number of programmes since he started on Breakfast for non-illness reasons, and no mention of it has been made here - his effective stand-in Jon Kay is fast rivalling him for the number of editions presented.

It's a shame, as Dan is a great presenter (as indeed is Jon!), but surely he ought to be presenting regularly rather than when sport permits?

I think the difference is that it's BBC Breakfast and not ‘The Dan Walker Show’, and that Breakfast is actually successful

I don't disagree - but surely he ought to be presenting more often than he has?

He at least has other high profile presenting gigs, that be had before taking the job.

I think some of the success of BBC Breakfast is because it has quite a large team of presenters on which to call when one of the main 4 are missing (for whatever reason).

As a result, the reliefs are as familiar to the regular viewers. They often appear as weekend presenters anyway: an advantage which GMB misses by being a weekday-only operation.

I don't see a problem with Dan having moved to present Euro2016, or going to Rio to cover the Olympic Games. I'm just as comfortable watching Charlie/Louise & Sally/Naga as it seems to have been this week.

Breakfast is the show that has in recent weeks had two business correspondents and Tina 'Yoof' Daheley cover at the weekend and yet isn't affected in the ratings.

Dan Walker will give some continuity while in Rio. I personally don't have an issue with sport taking over Breakfast on BBC One during the silly season, yet the NC should have an alternative, such as a simulcast of WN instead when the 'news' service on Olympic Breakfast is minimal.

With Dan and Sally out of the equation recently due to the Euros, I have felt they have been slightly exposed at weekends, with Sunday faces spilling onto Saturday and even Friday, and Sunday's themselves being hosted by both presenters being what could be described as fairly junior/relief/inexperienced rather than one in that category and one more senior.

Certain Sunday editions recently had a senior presenter who lead the show who was only senior by having hosted the show no more than about 3 or 4 times previously. There might have been in trouble had some major breaking news come in.

Not that there is anything wrong with this, just an observation.

Will he be working on a Sunday in Rio?

He doesn't work on Sundays for personal reasons. I don't see why being in Rio would change that.

No, Rishi Persaud presents his shift on BBC4.

As I've said elsewhere though this was the opportunity to use Dan's strengths in sports journalism to cement his position on the Breakfast sofa and anchor Olympic Breakfast - arguably just as high profile a role (if not more so) than the BBC4 evening coverage, just without the trip to Rio.

As for the Sunday issue - two ways to resolve it really. Either move the Sunday show back to London, which won't happen. Therefore it's getting an extra day a fortnight from the presenters, so the shift at the end of the week becomes Fri-Sun and alternate Thursdays.
