That set is looking much better nowadays - when they first used it it came across as little more than a cupboard, but a change of desk and lighting, plus a few other touches, has significantly improved it. Not sure it would work for Breakfast as it's probably a bit too small.

In fact the set used for sport bulletins into the NC might be better - it looks more like a BBC News set (in yellow rather than red) than a BBC Sport set (although you could argue it has nods to classic Grandstand sets), with the right lighting it could look reasonably similar to Studio E. In fact I would't be surprised if there was a planned contingency scenario to use it if Breakfast can't use its normal studio, assuming its gallery is capable of running a long form programme.

I'm sure I read somewhere (maybe on here) that the current main BBC Sport set that feeds into the News channel was going to be the original set for and NWT but the BBC DG at the time (I believe Mark Thompson) overruled the decision for some reason?

An urban myth. BBC Sport had long been planned to move into those studios. Unlike Breakfast, the Sport plans were not last minute. I'm pretty sure media boy clarified that for us at the time.

However Breakfast was planning on moving to a window-clad, street-view studio on the ground floor of Quay House. However glare issues from the Golden Building across the quay stopped this plan in it's tracks. An awful shame, as it would have added some diversity to breakfast studios back in 2012.

Didn't the NWT studio plan get modified once it was established (fairly late in the day) that they'd be joined by Breakfast? There was a look around Media City during construction when they pointed out where the new NWT studio would be and I'm fairly sure it isn't where it ended up.

This is where the original studio was meant to be, now used for visitors and tours. Shame really as this is a double height space and was designed for studio use, unlike the converted office on the 2nd floor that's seen in the last link that's used with blackout curtains and plasma's to block the view.

I'm not convinced there's really much of a problem to be honest. I've got used to the 'cosy' surroundings and the set is consistently well lit and bright. I don't like the background image they use though, and think they could easily use a better 'fake' landscape.

I'm tempted to trust the judgement of those who decided against the live quayside if the lighting was inconsistent, or the glass panels/background skyline, buildings didn't work, or look right upon detailed investigation. We saw how dark the sky can look over the short time Breakfast was presented live from the Commonwealth Games studio last year in Glasgow.

My only complaints with breakfast are the specific image they chose (the office chairs in particular) and the strained turning to the down the line screen in the corner behind the male presenter. The screen in the middle of the studio does seem to work better when they throw to the weather.

I'd be happy with that studio, for a half-hour morning news bulletin. But I wouldn't want to spend more than 3 hours in there doing a whole show, it does feel too small for a national, long-form, programme. If they were using studio B in NBH, specifically the side where the Andrew Marr show comes from on a Sunday, it would look far better.

To be honest, given the huge ratings lead that Breakfast has over (the in comparison generously staffed) GMB, I doubt anyone sees the studio Breakfast has as a major issue.

Cost effective and delivering a very healthy audience.

I suspect B might cost a bit more to staff - not sure. But to be honest, given the huge ratings lead that Breakfast has over the (in comparison generously staffed) GMB, I doubt anyone sees the studio Breakfast has as a major issue.

I don't disagree on staffing costs, and I don't disagree on the fact most viewers don't think it's an issue. I just think it would look better in Studio B at NBH, than it does now in Salford.

I understand why they decided not to use the ground floor area because of the windows, but if they were happy to cover up windows with plasmas and curtains then why not do that on the ground floor, double height space rather than move upstairs into an office?

Most viewers generally only watch BBC Breakfast for 30 minutes each day (hence why it's produced in repeating segments of that length), so perhaps that's not long enough for them to develop feelings of claustrophobia while occasionally glancing at the screen when getting ready for work.

I would be very surprised if the presenters felt that the studio was 'too small'. It's probably no smaller than N6, N8, N9 were, or Studio E at NBH and they all produce(d) rolling news for significantly longer than just over 3 hours a day.

It's easy to forget most presenters are just staring at a wall. Unless you have a Samsung Smart TV of course - then they can see everything!

The News at Ten looked amazing when it came from TC1 for the 2010 elections. I'm not sure that alone is a good enough argument for moving it full time to a huge studio though.
