There's already been a refresh of business presentation this year with new look screen graphics and a new business in brief segment by the screen.

BBC Breakfast didn't bother altering very much in response to the various GMTV changes in their latter years, or the various incarnations of Daybreak. They didn't even change much (as far as the average punter was concerned) when they moved to Salford.

Even the backdrop remained essentially the same as in TC7, and the format of the programme has been unchanged for many years. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" springs to mind as their best response to GMB for now.

However, if GMB is inexplicably a rip-roaring success, then I suppose the BBC would respond: but I suspect they would move back to the more formal 'Breakfast News' era that they did when TV-am was winning the ratings battle in the late 80s.

You can have the most expensive, glitziest set advertising revenue can buy, but in the end it's the content and format that count. For a few years BBC Breakfast was presented from what Jeremy Bowen described as a "Romanian Dentist's Waiting Room", but nobody seemed to mind at the time.

I'm hoping for a new background on the screens personally - the current ones look so bad IMO. I like the idea of a desk, and some standing up presentation - it's nice to vary it. Perhaps they will utilise the lovely coming up graphics more and have some new graphics based on that here and there. Sorry for the speculation though. Wink

They had a desk in the 2002 and 2006 revamps. They were dumped on both occasions after a few months and not a single person outside tv forum wants stand up presentation or cares about coming up graphics. Rolling Eyes

I know. If you look closely I actually said " I'm hoping for..." not "It would definitely kill GMB at birth if they..."

And, I am on TV Forum and I like TV presentation, therefore, I do care about stand up presentation and coming up graphics.. that's why I'm on TV Forum! Never did I say, that any of this will help kill GMB at birth, OR that the average Breakfast watcher cares. But I do which is fine and shouldn't offend anyone.

Couldn't agree more ASO.
Even if they do decide to revamp the studio in a few years time, or sooner, it's not like they've got tonnes of space to play with, i'm not saying they need a huge set, far from it. But a decent ammount of space is needed imo, or you'll come up with something that's on screen now, a tiny local news studio. But, the average public who don't live in the north west or part of any tv presentation forum, won't know the size of studio etc... I'd not be shocked if Breakfast moved studio, if and when they get their next set.

There is always the danger what is comfortable and familar at the moment may look dated and tired should Good Morning Britain manage to find an audience. Then again the Salford studio has never looked the best anyway - so I'd have thought if they do get round to upgrading the English regions they'd be first on the list due to Breakfast.

Any news as yet of what the changes may be? Having seen the GMB set pics, it looks much airier & bright - perhaps Breakfast could alter the very CGI looking backdrop? Maybe a new desk?

Would changing either of those elements bring in / retain the audience?

I've never met anyone who's said "I'd watch BBC Breakfast if it wasn't for the fake background".

True! Although many Breakfast viewers may prefer GMBs set & so, migrate? A new background would maybe help Breakfasts holistic impressions?

The average viewer won't care about sets, they may say ' i don't like that' but, will continue to watch, content is key. Not the set, although this helps.

If the presenters look comfortable on-screen and the set doesn't look horrific, I suspect the impact is marginal. It's just decoration.

Content and structure are the key elements.

No but I've met many who would watch Daybreak if it was presented from the Loose Women set. Wink
