Apologies for starting a new thread but I don't think this particularly fits into "Breakfast from Salford"......

I've just made an interesting discovery on YouTube - a full edition of BBC Breakfast News Extra from 21 May 1997. Note who (or should that be Huw?) is presenting the Breakfast News headlines in the first couple of minutes of the clip - I for one didn't realise he presented Breakfast News!

Is this coming from the 6th floor of TVC? I wandered around that floor earlier this year just before it closed and obviously it looked completely different in 2013, but the height from the windows seems about right for the 6th floor. And I know NCA was based on the 6th floor of TVC in the 90s.

What a cheap looking programme, how long did that last?

If it was only 20 mins long, what was the point.

I think it only lasted about a year or so. It was launched in the summer of 1996 and lasted through until around the time of the summer 1997 rebrand of Breakfast News. The changes to BN happened in June or July 1997 I think so this would be quite a late example of BN Extra.

Hopefully if noggin is reading this he might be able to provide some more accurate information!

Hooray, Breakfast News Extra again! It started in February 1996 as part of a revamp of the Beeb's morning line-up, seemingly so they could start programmes at 9.20 and get one jump ahead of ITV who of course started programmes at 9.25. The last one was on Friday 29th August 1997.

The Breakfast News 1997 revamp I think was just after the late May Bank Holiday.

Of course the 0915 Breakfast off air today is done for much the same reason - to steal a march on ITV's 0925 switch - it's just handled in a much less clunking fashion than bolting on an extra bit to an existing show as BNE appears to have been.

What happened, did the BBC run out of old episodes of Laverne & Shirley to chuck on after Breakfast News?

Interestingly, there was a silly rumour not so long ago that Breakfast would move the post-8:30 section of the programme back to London in order to get better guests for the entertainment/showbiz part.

It's the first time I've heard about this programme. Liz MacKean is a bit of a surprise too!

I think it is, I can't think of any other floors that would have had those railings outside. Plus you can see the Aerial Way building (Network House) outside so it much have come from the front of the building. That was a very thin room so it must have been incredibly cramped in there.

It was the 6th floor at the front of stage 5.

Cameras went from lino on to carpet tiles. Great planning.
