I never watched Breakfast News on BBC1 before the 1997 re-launch - we always used to watch TVam/GMTV. I recently came across a video clip on InformativosTV of a programme called "Breakfast News Extra". Just wondering if anyone can explain:
Umm ... late 1990s ISTR. It was an experimental (though fairly long-lived) extra chunk of the programme from 9 until 9.30 (? - possibly 9.15) and it came from what was essentially a corridor in the old BBC Newsroom. (This was before Stage 6 at TVC was opened). It wasn't too far removed from what happens in the latter stages of Breakfast these days - less news and current affairs, more lifestyle and more interviews.

Thanks for all your answers to my questions. So it seems it was the light-hearted section of the programme, as Breakfast News was fairly serious - am I right? At least it still was serious in 1997/8 when I first watched. It only really started going downhill in 2002.

Wouldn't have called it "light hearted". The phone-ins were often quite serious in nature - it was more interactive than the normal Breakfast News programme though.
