I quite like Kate Silverton

I don't get the Silverton hatred either. I think she's just friendly. I don't think she means to come across as patronising and above herself like people say she does. She just seems like a nice woman.

Each to their own I guess.

Yes, I agree. As I've said many, many times, she is perfect for BBC Breakfast.

(as an aside, I just watch an interview online with the band "Journey", who appeared on Breakfast last week. They have a new young, cute Filipino lead singer. Susanna spoke to him like he was a child, almost clasping her hands in a mumsy way, as if to suggest "did you wash your hands????" Kate's much better and good for BBC Breakfast.)

I hope you're not saying Kate's perfect for BBC Breakfast just to keep her off the World News channel Laughing

I'd say keep her off Breakfast, News at One, Weekend News etc. Her talents are just not utilised enough on those programmes. If you ask me, I'd say her talents lie with GMT more than anything...and any other World News programmes

I find some of the comments about Kate utterly bizarre and almost entirely baseless.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion (it takes an ass to cover every seat, after all), but describing her as, "obnoxious, self-interested and her entire delivery of the news is all about her" just seems very odd to me.

I mean, by what possible measure could someone who reads the news and has a moderate amount of banter be described as "obnoxious" (very unpleasant or rude)?

I don't get all the hating at all.

The Filipino guy is actually 43. Wink

Susanna is like that with most guests really. She's my favourite of the Breakfast presenters.

Kate Silverton's glasses annoy me.

43?????????????????????????? Wow. How does he manage to look like that?

Agree with Gavin's comments re- kate.

She's not awful, but:

Arrow Her delivery can be odd and non-fluent
Arrow She shakes her head unnecessarily as she reads stories
Arrow Her interviews aren't particularly special
Arrow She lacks good chemistry with fellow presenters, and
Arrow She's been pushed into higher profile slots over better qualified presenters

Like I say she's not awful, and I most certainly don't 'hate' her, but I don't have a huge amount of time for her. I think she's representative of a greater problem - one highlighted many times before on this forum - of presenters being promoted and used as much because of 'personality', looks and their image than their abilities and experience. Similar criticism has been made of Natasha Kaplinsky in the past.

I wouldn’t say I like or dislike Kate, in my view she’s just a normal sort of presenter. I can see both sides of the argument she at times can be patronizing but every so can Susana and Louise , I think its a bit of an overreaction from others to say that she’s awful I think she’s just passionate. I would say she’s halfway between Natasha and Sian.
If she can make it back in time and is willing to make the arrangements then I would give her the weekend role, I know some people may say it’s a demotion for her but if you think about it’s not Breakfast will probably get more viewers at the weekend because Daybreak viewers will tune in (correct me if I’m wrong), She already presents Alternate Saturday nationals and the only weekday national she holds is deputy on the 1 and also she’s number 2 during the week.

House, just in relation to your last point I understand what you’re saying but the women seem to have a better time than the men you see just about every female main news channel presenter, (apart from Carrie Gracie) Julia Summerville, Riz Lateef + world presenters such as Naga and Mishual at some point on BBC One, As I say above Kate’s role it’s not that glorious . I would say she has chemistry with Bill, Charlie and Jon Kay.

I will be sad to see Bill & Sian's partnership end; although I was sad when Sophie left Breakfast, and had similar telly-grief probably as far back as Selina Scott. "Telly-grief". Yes, I like that. It's mine.

*peers accusingly at potential plagiarisers*

I return to a similar point with regularity over the years here, so apologies for the repetition.

Its one thing to rubbish Kate, or say she's ok or profess your admiration at her skills and delivery - one man's meat is another man's poison.

But whether she's married, or up the duff, adopts cats, or lives in Guildford and the battery in her electric car only won't get her to the train station to get to Manchester - well, that all seems a bit 'none-of-our-business'.

Professionals in the acting and broadcasting fields sometimes live what others would consider a nomadic lifestyle, moving from place to place - even with young families in-tow. Its something that isn't easy to understand, for folks who wouldn't consider such a lifestyle - and placed within an internet discussion about who will present a programme from any given location, it reads as a bit personal, and not even based on how some professionals live their lives. If its your career, you do what you need to do.

Anyway, I'm sorry for segueing.

So looks like we might be without Sian on breakfast for August:

Twitter message: "So that's August then: live history programmes around the UK with @thehistoryguy. I can't wait! Jo Brand, Sheila Hancock etc involved too"

Maybe a chance to try out other presenters ahead of the Salford move.

I noticed Kate Silverton was presenting weekend Breakfast this morning, I take it she's covering for Susanna for the time being who's doing Sunday Morning Live??
